Stoczynski's Double-Double Leads Gannon Men's Basketball Team to Another Road Victory

Golden Knights Hold Ninth Consecutive Opponent Under 60 Points

Redshirt senior Tyler Stoczynski capped a brilliant weekend off the bench with his fourth career double-double.
MANSFIELD, Pa. - Tyler Stoczynski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded his first double-double since February 8, 2007 and the Gannon men's basketball team held its ninth consecutive opponent under 60 points as the Golden Knights completed a perfect Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover weekend Sunday afternoon with a 76-59 victory at Mansfield.

Gannon initially looked like it would roll for the second consecutive game, opening a 13-6 lead on Stoczynski's three-pointer 5:11 into the contest. However, Mansfield quickly answered with a 10-0 run over the next 4:23 to assume a 16-13 advantage.

In a half of streaks, Gannon grabbed a little momentum with a late rally. Leading 23-20, the Golden Knights scored eight straight points to assume its biggest first-half lead at 31-20. Stoczynski started the run with another three-pointer and Pierre Howard's (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) lay-up capped it with 2:08 left in the first stanza. The late blitz sent Gannon to the intermission with a 35-27 lead.

Head coach John T. Reilly's club was able to keep a physical Mansfield team at bay in the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead for the majority of final 20 minutes. Tony Fannick's lay-up at the 6:43 mark capped a brief 6-0 Mansfield run, cutting the deficit to 57-49.

However, Gannon pulled away with a 16-7 run down the stretch. Cory Knight (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) hit two three-pointers off the bench during the hot streak. Howard's lay-up with 1:53 remaining gave the Golden Knights their largest lead of the afternoon at 73-56. The two teams traded three points in the final 1:35 to account for the final 76-59 score.

Stoczynski reached double digits off the bench for the fourth time in the last five games, posting his fourth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Howard led the Gannon scoring attack with 19 points, finishing one shy of his season-high.

Knight added 12 points off the bench, drilling all four of his three-point attempts. Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) completed Gannon's group of double-digit scorers with 11 points and seven assists.

Gannon shot 49 percent (25-51) from the field, including a red-hot 58.3-percent (14-24) clip in the second half. The Golden Knights shot 50 percent (8-16) from three-point range and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free throw line.

Fannick led Mansfield with a double-double, producing 20 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Pender added 10 points. Yuseff Carr, who entered the game with 17.8 points per game, finished with nine points and three rebounds.

Mansfield shot 39.3 percent (22-56) from the floor, 35 percent (7-20) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the charity stripe.

Gannon, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, improved to 11-1 for the second consecutive season with its second straight victory. The Golden Knights, who entered the game with the nation's top-ranked defense with 53.5 points allowed per game, held their ninth consecutive opponent under 60 points. Only one opponent has topped 60 points this season. The squad also posted a 38-29 edge on the glass, out-rebounding its opponent for the 27th consecutive game.

Mansfield dropped to 7-5. Gannon opens PSAC Western Division play Wednesday, January 14 at California (Pa.). Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
