ERIE, PA - Can someone say playoffs? March is (nearly) here, and the madness begins early! Multiple teams will continue or start postseason play this week, while basketball closes the regular season and pushes to host postseason games of their own.

Meanwhile, spring sports teams are full go. Baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse are all back in action this week, while Acrobatics & Tumbling will host a home game for the second straight week.

POSTSEASON RECAP - LAST WEEK

WOMEN'S WRESTLING:
The Golden Knights are headed to NCAA Championships! Sophomore Bella Phillips took home the regional title at 180 pounds on Saturday, her second consecutive regional crown. Phillips will now head to nationals ranked fifth in the country by the Open Mat. NCAA Championships are in Coralville, Iowa on March 6th adn 7th.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING: Gannon wrapped up the 2026 PSAC Championship meet in successful fashion on Saturday in York, PA. The Golden Knights men's team claimed second overall in the team standings for a second consecutive year, while the women finished seventh in a 12 team field. GU will wait for later this week to see if any competitors have NCAA Championship qualifying times.

THIS WEEK

No. 9 ACROBATICS AND TUMBLING (1-1)
Saturday, 2/28 - vs Buffalo State & Trine (Tri-Meet) - 12:00 pm

The No. 9 Gannon Acrobatics & Tumbling team earned a statement victory in its home opener Friday night, defeating No. 7 Duquesne, 259.755–254.645, inside the Highmark Events Center during Alumni Appreciation Night.  The win marked the first career head coaching victory for Addy Womeldorph and came in front of an electric home crowd. The Golden Knights took the lead by winning the toss event, 28.20–26.55, then extended the margin by outscoring Duquesne 51.675–51.425 in tumbling and never relinquished control the rest of the meet.

More home action is this weekend for GU, as the Golden Knights will host Buffalo State & Trine in a tri-meet on Saturday at 12:00 pm.

No. 8 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (24-3, 16-2 PSAC)
Wednesday, 2/25 - @ Clarion - 5:30 pm
Saturday, 2/28 - @ IUP - 1:00 pm

The final week of the season brings intrigue for the Golden Knights. Gannon is riding a three game win streak after home triumphs over SRU and UPJ to close the regular season home slate. The Golden Knights also clinched a top two seed in the PSAC postseason last Wednesday, guaranteeing a home game in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.

But the top seed in the west is still in play. Though GU does not control its own destiny, they'll have another opportunity against IUP on Saturday, the current leader in the clubhouse. GU fell to the Crimson Hawks, 68-63 back on January 17th. A challenging matchup with Clarion precedes the season finale. The Golden Eagles nearly took down Gannon earlier this year at the HEC, with Gannon forcing overtime late and winning in the extra period, 83-74.

No. 5 MEN'S BASKETBALL (24-2, 17-1 PSAC)
Wednesday, 2/25 - @ Clarion - 7:30 pm
Saturday, 2/28 - @ IUP - 3:00 pm

They continue to move up the totem pole in the national rankings. Now fifth in the nation in the NABC national polls, the Golden Knights will carry an 11 game winning streak into the final week of the regular season. Two wins over SRU and UPJ last week closed out a perfect 14-0 home regular season record. And, in the process, Easton Bazzoli became the fast head coach in men's basketball program history to 50 wins last Wednesday evening. Also, senior Victor Desmond (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska) surpassed 1,000 career points in the win on Saturday against the Mountain Cats.

Two tough tests await GU to close the regular season. Gannon travels to Clarion on Wednesday to face a Golden Eagles team fighting for a spot in the PSAC tournament. Then, a trip to IUP awaits on Saturday. Gannon beat the Crimson Hawks 92-65 back on January 17th, but IUP has always proven a tough place to play for GU. The Golden Knights control their own destiny: if they win out this week, they'll clinch the PSAC West regular season title and the right to host the PSAC men's basketball tournament.

BASEBALL (2-1)
Saturday, 2/28 - vs Tiffin (Washington, PA) - 12:00 pm/Game 2
Sunday, 3/1 - vs Tiffin (Washington, PA) - 12:00 pm/Game 2

The offense had no problem starting the season off hot in the opening series. GU would score 22 combined runs in the first two games of the season, ultimately taking two of three on the road at Shippensburg. The opening day win was the first for the Golden Knights since 2022.

Gannon has four more this weekend, traveling to Washington, PA to face Tiffin in a Saturday/Sunday doubleheader.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE (1-1)
Wednesday, 2/25 - @ Ashland - 4:00 pm
Saturday, 2/28- @ Lincoln Memorial - 3:00 pm

Gannon suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, a 16-5 setback to Bloomsburg. Isabella Veltre (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) led Gannon with two goals, both coming on man-up opportunities. She now has seven goals in her first two games.

GU will travel for two road games this week in what is a six game road stretch to begin the season.

WOMEN'S WATER POLO (2-4)
Saturday, 2/28 - vs La Salle & Saint Francis (Erie, PA) - 10:30 am/3:00 pm
Sunday, 3/1 - vs Wheaton & Penn State Behrend (Erie, PA) - 11 am/2:00 pm

The Golden Knights had a Sunday full of success, taking down both Penn State Behrend and Grove City in a Sunday doubleheader in Washington, PA. The wins improve the Golden Knights to 2-4 on the season.  GU tallied their highest goal output of the season, tallying 26 for a two game total of 47 total goals. GU would score 16 times in the middle two periods to pull ahead from Grove City.

The Golden Knights will return to Erie, PA for the Curtis Robinette Invitational on February 28th and March 1st. The two Saturday games include contests against La Salle (10:30 am) followed by a matchup with Saint Francis (3:00 pm).

No. 3 MEN'S WRESTLING
Saturday, 2/28 - @ NCAA Super Regional One (East Stroudsburg, PA) - All Day

Fresh off a PSAC championship, the rubber now meets the road for the third ranked Golden Knights. Gannon returns to the NCAA Super Regional One as historically one of the most successful programs in the region at this specific meet. GU sent nine of ten entrants to nationals a year ago and are primed to have a similar, if not better result this season.

Eight of the ten projected entrants for the Golden Knights are ranked by the Open Mat and five are in the top ten. Of the nine qualifiers from a year ago, two regional champions return for head coach Tom BoydDorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), who took home the regional crown at 285 a year ago, and Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High), who was victorious at 174. Jackson has wrestled at 184 this season.

The top three competitors in each bracket will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Sioux Falls, SD this March. The double-elimination tourney gets underway at 10:00 am in East Stroudsburg, PA.
