Golden Knights Split Twinbill, Take Season Opening Series

THE GAME FACTS

  • Game One Final Score: Gannon 11, Shippensburg 3

  • Game Two Final Score: Shippensburg 3, Gannon 2

  • Location: Shippensburg, PA

  • Next Game:  vs Tiffin (Saturday, 2/28 - Washington, PA)

VILLANOVA, PA - The Golden Knights earned an opening series win on Saturday thanks to an 11-3 win in game one of a doubleheader against Shippensburg. GU would take a 2-1 lead in game two, but a sixth inning home run from the Raiders proved to be the difference.

In game one, Gannon's offense exploded for a second straight game, scoring eight runs in the final two innings of play. GU would put up a three spot in the fourth following an early run from the Raiders.

It looked like GU would earn the sweep in game two. Gannon would take a 2-1 lead in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Matt Smith (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area). But a Shippensburg two run homer in the bottom half was enough to secure one game.

The Golden Knights took the series, ending opening weekend 2-1 on the campaign.

THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 1

  • Crooked Numbers- Gannon would score three or more runs in three innings in game one. The Golden Knights were anchored by a five run sixth and three run seventh, but it was a three run fourth that gave the Golden Knights the lead for good after trailing 1-0
  • Spreading the Wealth - Eight Gannon hitters recorded at least one base knock on Saturday in game one. Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley), Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover), Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati), and Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) each recorded multiple hits.
  • On the Bump - Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) earned the win in his first start of the season. The righty went 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run and scattering five hits. He struck out three.
  • Hits Galore - GU recorded 10 hits or more for a second straight game, pushing their two game total to 29.
  • RBI Machine- Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) collected three RBI's in the game on two hits and scored a run.

THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 2
  • BK, Have it Your Way - Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) had his second game of the season with an RBI, driving in the first run of the game in the fourth.
  • Smith Shines - In a no-decision, sophomore Nolan Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was spectacular. Smith went 5 2/3, allowing just three hits and three walks, striking out ta pair. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) surrendered the game winning run.

THE NEXT GAME

The Golden Knights will travel to Washington, PA for four games with Tiffin on February 28th and March 1st.
