ERIE, Pa. – Make little mistake: the heart of the winter sports season is upon us.
Just a few weeks from now, Women's Water Polo, Acrobatics & Tumbling, and Competitive Cheer & Dance will start their 2026 campaigns, with other spring sports set to begin practices this week. While the countdown for their seasons begin, this week will prove to be crucial for men's and women's hoops. Men's and Women's Basketball prepare for a pair of home tests each on Wednesday and Saturday, while Swimming returns for the second half of the year for Senior Day.
Here is our weekly athletics preview:

The Golden Knights suffered their first conference loss of the season last Saturday, falling to Cal (PA), 99-88. The Vulcans were also unbeaten in conference in what is shaping up to be a gauntlet of a PSAC West slate. Gannon dispatched Edinboro, 101-83 earlier in the week for a rivalry win. Sophomore Lucas Sekasi (Washington, DC/Jackson-Reed) had another outstanding week, putting up 25 points against the FIghting Scots and 23 more against the Vulcans. The 25 points was a career high.

The next two games for Gannon won't get easier as PSAC West action continues. The Golden Knights will face Seton Hill (12-4, 6-2) on Wednesday before welcoming in IUP (10-2, 6-1) to town for PSAC 75 Day on Saturday.
No. 5 Women's Basketball (16-1)

15 straight wins heading into this week. Cleve Wright's squad went two for two to open up PSAC West play last week, edging rival Edinboro in overtime, 63-56 before storming past Cal (PA) in an impressive 82-46 win. Post player Mia Slater (Canberra, Australia/Canberra Grammar School) has continued to light up the scoreboard in the last month, pouring in 36 total points over the two games. Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) was also impressive on Saturday, leading the team with 20 points in the win.
-
Just like on the men's side, this week will be a giant task for the women's squad, as they'll welcome in the other two unbeaten teams in conference play to town. First up, Seton Hill, a team Gannon played and beat four times last season en route to the Elite 8. The Griffins (12-2, 8-0) return a bevy of starters from a year ago. Similarly, IUP (13-0, 7-0) hasn't lost a game and is just behind the Golden Knights (8th - Gannon is 5th) in the latest WBCA coaches poll.
Swimming (2-1)
Saturday, January 17th vs Oberlin & Malone - 1:00 pm (Recreation & Wellness Center Pool) (SENIOR DAY)
- The second half of the season starts this weekend! Gannon, fresh off a productive 2025, will return to the pool for Senior Day on Saturday when they host Oberlin & Malone for a tri-meet.
- Senior Day festivities will begin just prior to the start of the meet.
- Gannon welcomed in new assistant coach Bill Bradley last week ahead of Saturday's meet. Bradley joins the Gannon staff after spending more than four years as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming and diving programs at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
#17 Women's Wrestling (7-5)

The Golden Knights traveled to Cedar Rapids, IA last week to compete in the NWCA National Duals. Gannon would fall to McKendree in the opening round before earning an impressive 32-12 win over West Liberty immediately following. GU would fall to Sacred Heart to close the tournament. Gannon returns to action next Saturday, January 24th at the Journeyman Women's Duals.
