Golden Knights End Spring trip with Loss to Wayne State (Neb.)

Wes Parker goes deep for second straight game

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Gannon baseball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida on Sunday morning with an 8-2 loss to Wayne State (Neb.). While it wasn't the result head coach DJ Cannon was hoping for the fourth-year coach has to be pleased with a 4-1 record in the Sunshine State. That included an 11-7 upset of No. 20 Rollins on Friday.

Wayne State grabbed a 3-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings with a run in the top of the third and two more in the fourth. Starter Cam Ward (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) breezed through the first inning and escaped a jam with runners on second and third with a pair of strikeouts in the second.

The Wildcats got to Ward with a run in the third and in the fourth scored twice on Connor Hunt's triple. Gannon manufactured a run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe). The sophomore center fielder walked with one out, reached second on a wild pickoff throw, stole third and scored on Cainen Atherton's (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) sacrifice fly.

Ward was relieved in the top of the fifth by Carson Whitehead as Cannon used six pitchers in the game. Ward allowed five hits and struck out four.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) hit a home run for the second straight game and third in the last four to make it 4-2. But Wayne State scored three times to go up 7-2 and added a single run in the ninth.

Wayne State outhit Gannon 7-6. Redshirt freshman Nick Robertson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was the most effective of Gannon's relievers, throwing 1.2 hitless innings and striking out two. Ashton Wheelock (Ashtabula, Ohio/Lakeside) allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Gannon now heads back north and will return to the diamond for four games at Grand Valley State on Friday, March 14 to Sunday, March 16. The teams are scheduled to play a single nine-inning game on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday and another nine-inning single game on Sunday.
