Hood Delivers Six Strong Innings but Gannon Falls 3-2 at Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Gannon a 3-2 defeat in the first of four games hosted by the Lakers over the next three days. Gannon dipped to 5-6 with its second straight loss while GVSU is now 13-4. Four of Gannon's six losses have come by a run.

Gannon's Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) and Owen Avery of Grand Valley State engaged in a pitching duel on Thursday afternoon. Hood went the first six inning allowing just one run while Avery also allowed just one run in seven innings.

Grand Valley State took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against starter Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) thanks to a two-out RBI single by Jonas Gulbrandsen.

Avery retired the first nine Gannon batters before Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) reached base on error to open the fourth. Kula advanced to second on a wild pitch and with two outs scored on Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) single to left field.

Hood pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning and neither team threatened until the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) relieved Hood to open the inning. Crowley retired the leadoff hitter but then allowed three straight hits, including back-to-back doubles, as the Lakers scored a pair of runs. Crowley retired the next two batters to limit the damage,

Gannon cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the eighth. Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) opened the inning with singles against reliever Colby Phipps and Frank Kula's (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) sacrifice put runners on second and third. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) hit a sacrifice fly to advance both runners but the inning ended with a groundout.

Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) opened the top of the ninth with a single but with one out the sophomore outfielder was thrown out attempting to steal second. The game
ended on a called third strike.

Gannon ended with six hits, all singles, while GVSU had seven safeties. Bemis was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Hood allowed three hits and three walks while striking out two. Crowley threw the seventh inning and was pinned with the loss while Ryan Bioni (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Avery allowed three hits in his seven innings of work striking out 11 batters.

The two teams will meet again in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 12 noon.
