Gannon Ranked 11th in Final WBCA Division II Top 25 Poll

ERIE, Pa. -- The Gannon University women's basketball team finished 11th in the WBCA Division II Postseason Women's Basketball Coaches Poll. The WBCA announced the final rankings today.

It marks the second straight year head coach Cleve Wright has guided the Golden Knights to a spot in the final rankings, but the circumstances from last year to this year were quite different. What wasn't was an Atlantic Regional championship and a second straight berth in the Elite Eight.

Gannon ended the year at 28-7, defeating Indiana (Pa.) in the Atlantic Regional title game. The Golden Knights went into the Elite Eight as the eighth seed and lost to top-seeded Grand Valley State in the quarterfinals. The Lakers would go on to win the national championship.

Grand Valley State (38-2) finished number one in the poll with Pittsburg State (33-4) ranked second and Union (Tenn.) (33-4) third. Cal State Dominguez Hills (36-2) and Bentley (33-2) rounded out the top five.

Texas Woman's (33-2) anchored the second five in sixth place with Lubbock Christian (32-5) seventh and Ashland (32-4) eighth. North Georgia (31-3) and Coker (29-6) completed the top ten. Gannon finished with 286 points in the poll, ten behind Coker.

Gannon ended the 2023-24 campaign ranked fourth in Division II behind WBCA Division II Player of the Year Sam Pirosko. The Golden Knights finished with a 35-3 record. This year Wright had to mold a young team featuring ten freshmen and sophomores and no Pirosko. Despite losing a pair of expected starters for long periods of time the Golden Knights made a return trip to the Elite Eight while winning the Atlantic Regional.

The Golden Knights were the lone PSAC squad in the final WBCA Division II Top 25.
