Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader With Clarion

ERIE, PA - For eleven innings, Gannon was in control of their doubleheader with Clarion. After a convincing win in game one, the Golden Knights built a 3-0 lead in game two, but couldn't hang on in a Friday split in their home PSAC opener.

Game 1 – Gannon 6, Clarion 2

The Golden Knights used the long ball to open the PSAC campaign with a win. They hit three home runs and added a pair of doubles among their seven hits. Meanwhile three pitchers limited Clarion to just three hits. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run to left field, his first of the season. It drove in Brady Gavula (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), who opened the inning with a double. Clarion cut the lead in half with a run in the first inning. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) made it 3-1 in the fourth when the big first baseman hit a tape-measure shot to left field that cleared the football end zone. It was his fifth home run of the season. Gannon added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) counted for the fifth-inning run with a double to left center to drive in Hunter Toriano, who had singled. Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) home run leading off the sixth, his second of the season, made it 5-1 and Smith would later score on an error after singling for his second hit of the day and stealing second. Clarion's Randy Carlo hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) improved to 2-0 while tossing the first four innings. The right hander held Clarion to just one hit but walked five. He struck out six. Ryan Bioni (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) relieved and threw 1.2 scoreless innings before Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) relieved in the sixth and recorded the final out with runs on first and second. He threw 1.1 innings to earn his second save.

Game 2 – Clarion 5, Gannon 3

After two scoreless innings Gannon pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) reached on an error and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) lined a single up the middle to drive in Kula. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) followed with a two-run double off the netting right field to score Soto and Parker. Starter Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) had limited the Golden Eagles to just to hits over the first four innings but they got to the right hander in the top of the fifth. Clarion bunched together four hits to drive Boynar from the game. In the process the Golden Eagles tied the game at 3-3. The Golden Knights threatened in the bottom of the inning but hit into a double play with the bases loaded. Clarion scored the winning runs in the top of the seventh thanks to three hits against reliever Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel).
