Golden Knights Drop Twinbill vs. Lake Erie Despite Excellent Outing by Boynar

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – The Gannon baseball team fell to 1-4 with losses in both ends of a doubleheader against Lake Erie on Friday afternoon. The Storm won game one by a 5-1 margin then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 6-5 win. The games were played at Andrews Osborne Academy in Willoughby, Ohio.

The first game was a scheduled nine-inning game while the nightcap was seven innings. The two teams were scheduled to play a second doubleheader on Saturday but that was canceled due to impending poor weather.

Gannon has now suffered three one-run losses as head coach DJ Cannon has watched a young team battle but falter late in games.
The Golden Knights now head to Florida to play in the Russ-Mart Invitational. They will face five games in the Sunshine State, beginning with a game vs. Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, March 5.

Game 1 – Lake Erie 5, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights held a slim 1-0 lead through five innings but Lake Erie scored twice in the sixth and added three more runs in the seventh. Gannon was limited to just two hits in the game. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) led off the third inning with a triple to left centerfield and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe). Gannon's only other hit was a single by Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the third. Sophomore Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), meanwhile, did not allow a baserunner for 5.2 innings and had a no-hitter into the sixth. Lake Erie's Sebastian Silva opened the sixth with a walk, moved up to second on a sacrifice and tied the game at 1-1 when Zimba Cadiz doubled to left center for the first hit of the game. Cadiz came around to score when he hustled all the way from second base on an errant pickoff throw. The Storm scored three more runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of hits and four walks. The loss spoiled a brilliant pitching performance by Boynar. The big right hander allowed just the one hit and three walks in six innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters. The 12 strikeouts are the most since Eric Sapp struck out 13 against Seton Hill in 2022.

Game 2 – Lake Erie 6, Gannon 5
Gannon battled back from a 4-0 deficit after one inning to tie the game, only to see the Storm push across the winning run following an error. Lake Erie jumped on starter Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) for four runs in the first inning on a home run and two doubles. Gannon answered in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit. The Golden Knights received four walks and Lake Erie also committed an error. One run scored on a sacrifice fly by Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and the second on a bases loaded walk to Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands). Lake Erie countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame for a 5-2 lead. Gannon made it 5-3 in the fourth inning as Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) stroked a two-out RBI single. The Golden Knights had some more two-out lightning in the top of the sixth. Kula's double drove in Colvin and Walker followed with his second RBI single. Unfortunately, Lake Erie scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Bioni (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) avoided further damage, pitching out of a bases loaded jam.  Walker ended the game 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, as did Kula. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) relieved Engel in the third and threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks and striking out two.
