Golden Knights Open Spring Trip with 13-2 Win over Davis & Elkins

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Gannon opened its five-game spring trip to Florida with an impressive 13-2 win over Davis & Elkins on Wednesday morning. The Golden Knights improved to 2-4 while D&E is now 1-7.

Gannon received an outstanding pitching effort from redshirt sophomore Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area). The big righthander went the first six innings in his longest stint as a Golden Knight. He allowed an infield hit to the opening batter and then allowed just one more baserunner, a walk to lead off the fifth inning. At one point he retired 12 batters in a row. Hood struck out a career-high six batters.

The Golden Knights gave Hood a good cushion scoring four runs in the third inning and another four in the fifth. They added four more insurance runs in the ninth as the Golden Knights finished with 17 hits.

Gannon opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the third inning. With one out Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) singled to left field and scored the first run of the game on Frank Kula's (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) triple to right field. After a second out Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) drove Kula home with a single to right. Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) walked and Brady Gavula (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) followed with a two-run double to left field to make it 4-0.

Gannon's pushed across another four runs in the top of the fifth, helped by an error, a passed ball that allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, and a pair of walks. Kula reached first on the passed ball to open the inning on a strikeout. Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) bunt single put runners on first and second and after both runners advanced on a wild pitch an error allowed two runs to score.

The inning got worse from there for the Senators. After a strikeout Brady Gavula (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) walked and Tommy Koroly's (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) single loaded the bases. Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) drove in the seventh run with a walk and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) made it 8-0 with a fielder's choice.

The lead grew to 9-0 in the top of the eighth inning. Bemis reached base for the fourth time with a single and scored on Koroly's single to center.

Gannon added on four more runs in the ninth. The first run came home on Parker's triple, and he scored on a single through the left side by pinch hitter Joey Fazzone (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory). Gavula hit Gannon's third triple of the day to plate Fazzone and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic), another pinch hitter, drove in the final run with single.

Davis & Elkins would avert a shutout with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs against reliever Hayden Jenkins (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton). Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area), like Jenkins a freshman, through the previous two innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

Gavula reached five times with a pair of hits and three walks. The redshirt sophomore drove in three runs. Soto drove in a pair of runs while Bemis had three base hits.

Gannon returns to action on Thursday with another nine-inning game against Rockhurst. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
