Weekly Athletics Preview: December 8th-14th

ERIE, Pa. – And then there was one! The Gannon volleyball team earned its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and will compete in Sioux Falls, SD from December 11-14.

At the same time the volleyball team was sweeping Indiana (Pa.) in the Atlantic Regional final the men's soccer team was competing in New England for the third straight weekend. The Golden Knights season finally came to an end in the Elite Eight with the loss at top-seeded Southern New Hampshire.

And if that wasn't enough, in West Virginia the Gannon men's basketball team was putting the finishing touches on a 91-79 win at Shepherd as the other two events were going on.

With graduation taking place this past Sunday it's finals weeks so a very limited schedule is in order.  Here's a look at how last week went along with a look ahead to this week.

THIS WEEK IN GANNON ATHLETICS

No. 14 Men's Soccer (15-3-4)
Season Completed

  • The Golden Knights saw their season come to an end on a cold Saturday afternoon in New Hampshire. Top-seeded Southern New Hampshire handed No. 6 Gannon a 5-0 defeat in the Elite Eight, ending one of the most successful seasons in team history.

  • Head coach Billy Colton guided the Golden Knights to a 15-3-4 record, winning a first-ever PSAC Championship. The Golden Knights then upset No. 3 Bentley and No. 2 Franklin Pierce by the same 2-1 score to reach the Elite Eight.

Volleyball (27-7)
Thursday, Dec. 11 vs. Concordia-St. Paul (Elite Eight quarterfinals) -- 2:30 p.m.

  • Top-seeded Gannon was dominant in winning its second straight Atlantic Regional and fourth in the last five years. Gannon's journey to the Elite Eight began with a 3-0 win over eighth-seeded Fayetteville State. Pitt-Johnstown took game one in the semifinals but Gannon won the next three games to send the fourth seed packing.

  • That left Gannon facing another PSAC West foe in the Atlantic Regional championship. No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) upset PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals but the Golden Knights ran away with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 sweep.

  • Head coach Matt Darling's team faces a tall task in the Elite Eight, but who doesn't. The Golden Knights are the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul in Thursday's quarterfinals. The Central Region champions are 29-5 and in search of their 10th national championship.

  • Five Golden Knights earned All-Tournament honors. They included Bengisu Arslan, Lauren Atwell, Alexis Fowler, Sydney Wake, and Nehir Yazicioglu.

No. 17 Men's Basketball (6-1)
Saturday, Dec. 13 vs. Saginaw Valley State – 3:00 p.m.

  • 17th-ranked Gannon began PSAC action on Saturday with a 91-79 road win at Shepherd. The contest was a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship. Lucas Morgan led three players in double figures with 25 points, matching his career high.

  • The Golden Knights play once this week and it promises to be another challenging contest. Saginaw Valley State was picked to finish eighth in the GLIAC preseason poll but an infusion of Mid-American Conference transfers has the Cardinals off to an impressive 6-1 start. On Saturday SVSU won at 19th-ranked Grand Valley State.

No. 6 Women's Basketball (9-1)
Does not play this week.

  • After moving up one spot in the national rankings to sixth Gannon ran its winning streak to eight games with a pair of wins last week. As you would expect with Cleve Wright at the helm, the Golden Knights continue to play suffocating defense.

  • Gannon began the week with a 72-50 win vs. D'Youville then opened PSAC play with a 68-51 win at Shepherd. The Golden Knights improved to 9-1 and have now held all but one opponent to 55 points or less. That one misstep – a 60-58 loss to Northern Michigan in game number two.

  • Bri Claxon scored 29 points in the two games to boost her career total to 1,445 points.

Women's Wrestling (6-3)
Sunday, Dec. 14 at North Central Open – All Day

  • What began as an eight-team tournament turned into six and eventually five but Gannon enjoyed a successful run in the Gannon Women's Duals. The teams competed in a round-robin format with Gannon going 3-1.

  • Gannon opened the wrestling with a 32-11 win over Otterbein, followed by a 49-0 shutout of Waynesburg. The Golden Knights made it three wins in a row with a 30-14 triumph over West Liberty. They put up a strong battle against 18th-ranked Lehigh falling 26-17.

  • Bella Phillips (180 lbs.) was one of four Gannon wrestlers to post wins in all four matches. In addition, Jada Badayos-Chaves (103 lbs.), Leyna Rumpler (145 lbs.), and Rose Cassioppi (207 lbs.) went 4-0.

  • Gannon climbed to fifth in the latest NWCA Div. II poll and features five nationally-ranked grapplers. That includes two-time All-American Jerry Echevarria who is ranked first at 133 lbs.. In addition, Patrick Jackson is fifth at 184 lbs., with Logan Sallot (seventh at 125 lbs.), Dillon Walker (seventh at 174 lbs,) and Jake Niffenegger (eighth at 141 lbs.) also ranked.
