Weekly Athletics Preview - October 20th-October 26th

ERIE, Pa. – While men's and women's golf have put the clubs away until the spring Gannon still has seven fall sports competing along with the winter programs now under way.
Success has once again been the name of the game for the Golden Knights. The women's soccer, men's soccer and volleyball teams all reside in first place in their respective divisions. The men's and women's cross country teams run in the PSAC Championships this week.

The men's and women's swimming teams were the first winter programs to start, both with impressive showings against Clarion. The men's wrestling team holds its annual Marron-Gold Wrestleoffs this weekend with the regular season a week away.
Below is the schedule for the week ahead, along with a quick preview of each team.

THIS WEEK IN GANNON ATHLETICS

Volleyball (16-4)
Friday, Oct. 24 at Edinboro -- 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 25 vs. Cedarville -- 3:00 p.m.
  • The second half of PSAC West action has begun with Gannon holding a three-game lead in the Western Division standings. Head coach Matt Darling's squad has now run off 11 straight wins to improve to 16-4 overall and 7-0 in the Western Division.
  • Gannon posted a pair of 3-0 divisional wins this past weekend over California (Pa.) and Seton Hill. The Golden Knights are not only undefeated at home at 7-0 but have not lost a set.
  • The Golden Knights head to Edinboro on Friday looking for a regular season sweep before hosting Cedarville on Saturday afternoon. The last non-conference match of the year, Cedarville is currently 13-5 with wins over a pair of nationally-ranked opponents.

No. 7 Women's Soccer (12-0-1)
Wednesday, Oct. 22 vs. Pitt-Johnstown – 6:00 p.m. -
Saturday, Oct. 25 at Indiana (Pa.) – 1:00 p.m.
  • Head coach Colin Petersen has guided the Golden Knights to one of the best starts in team history and a seventh-place ranking.  The Golden Knights have now won four straight games and sit atop the PSAC West at 8-0-1 with five matches remaining.
  • Gannon hosts Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday before traveling to a showdown at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks have accounted for the lone blemish on Gannon's slate as the two battled to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 4. IUP is 10-1-2 and among "others receiving votes" last week in the national rankings. Gannon has 25 points to lead the Western Division, but Slippery Rock (24) and IUP (22) are close behind. All three have already clinched berths in the PSAC Tournament.
  • Ella Fadale (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) picked up a pair of honors this week after scoring a pair of goals in three straight matches. The senior midfielder was named the NCAA Div. II Player of the Week and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Week. Fadale had two goals and an assist in an impressive 5-1 win over No. 24 Adelphi, giving her 12 goals on the season.

Men's Soccer (6-2-4)
Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Seton Hill – 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 25 vs. Pitt-Johnstown – 5:30 p.m.
  • Five matches remain in the regular season and head coach Billy Colton is hoping his team is ready to get on a roll. The Golden Knights posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season thanks to a 3-2 win over D'Youville and a 4-0 whitewashing of California (Pa.) with Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular) in goal. The two victories leave the Golden Knights at 6-2-4 overall and 3-0-1 in the PSAC West.
  • Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) scored twice in the win at D'Youville, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute less than two minutes after D'Youville tied the match.  Freshman Frederik Paulsen (Odense, Denmark/Oure Kostgymnasium) accounted for the first two goals in Saturday's win at Cal.
  • Gannon plays twice this week as the second half of conference divisional play begins. Wednesday they travel to Seton Hill for a huge match between the top two teams in the division. The Griffins have not lost since a 5-0 setback at Gannon on Oct. 1 and come in at 7-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. Gannon celebrates Senior Day on Saturday hosting Pitt-Johnstown. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 4.

Football (1-6)
Saturday, Oct. 25 vs. Edinboro – 12 noon
  • It's time for the Battle of the 814 as Edinboro makes the short journey up I-79 to play at McConnell Family Stadium. A battered Golden Knights team dipped to 1-6 with a 28-14 loss at Seton Hill that was much closer than the final score. The game was tied at 14-14 until late in the third quarter and the Griffins tacked on an insurance score midway through the final period.
  • Gannon has proven particularly tough at home, including a 38-35 upset of nationally-ranked Slippery Rock three weeks ago and a 48-46 last second loss to Clarion the last time the Golden Knights took the field at home. Gannon seeks to extend a four-game winning streak against the Fighting Scots.

Cross Country
Saturday, Oct. 25 at PSAC Championships at Edinboro, Pa. – women (10 a.m.) / men (11 a.m.)

  • A year ago the men's cross country team placed fifth out of 15 teams, the top finish in team history. Luke Malena (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) is Gannon's top returning finisher after earning All-PSAC honors thanks to a 28th-place showing.
  • A young women's squad looks to build off last year's 11th-place finish out of 17 teams. Emily Bowers (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) has enjoyed a strong sophomore campaign after earning All-PSAC accolades last year, coming in 18th.

On Sunday they square off against Mercyhurst and Washington & Jefferson.
  • The Golden Knights come in at 9-8 after suffering an 18-12 loss to a strong Navy squad. • Head coach Milan Medo officially began his second season at the helm of the Gannon swimming program on Friday against Clarion.  The men's team prevailed over the Golden Eagles by a 173-121 margin while the women fell in the final couple of events 151-143.
  • The Golden Knights claimed 12 of 16 events on the men's side, setting the tone early with a 1–2 finish in the 200 medley relay. Gannon closed the night in style as Bryce Buret, Bengimin Ambrosiani (Seward, Alaska/Seward), Nickolas Ambrosiani (Seward, Alaska/Seward), and Nikita Pau Poparcea Greiter (Sant Carles de la Rapita, Spain) touched first in the 200 free relay to seal the meet with a pool-record time of 1:24.52.
