Gannon earns split on opening day at Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Gannon men's water polo team began year number two under head coach Zarko Sadikovic with a split of two matches on Saturday. The Golden Knights are competing in the Navy Open. The 2024 campaign began with a come-from-behind 19-18 win over Johns Hopkins in the morning before the Golden Knights fell to host Navy 20-8 in the afternoon.

Gannon is back in action on Sunday morning playing another Division I outfit, Mount St. Mary's. That match gets underway at 10:30 a.m.

Gannon 19, Johns Hopkins 18
The Golden Knights trailed 8-5 late in the first quarter before outscoring the Blue Jays 5-2 in the second quarter to take an 11-10 lead at the half. Gannon gained the lead for good midway through the second period on a goal by Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore). Gannon roared out of halftime to score the first four goals of the third quarter. Johns Hopkins closed to 16-14 after three periods, but Nikiforos Liantziri and Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) scored goals in the first three minutes of the final quarter for an 18-14 lead. The Blue Jays made it 18-16 with 1:32 left but Fribourg added the third of his three goals with just under a minute to play for a three-goal cushion. Kotskar, who set a school record last year with 99 goals, led Gannon with six goals.

Navy 20, Gannon 8
The Midshipmen jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and coasted to the win, scoring six times in each of the first three quarters. Navy was able to hold Kotskar without a goal as a pair of newcomers – Petar Markovic () and Victor Volant () – led Gannon with two goals apiece.
