Gannon men's soccer team drops 1-0 home game against Saginaw Valley State

Golden Knights limits Cardinals to one shot on goal in the game as GU falls to 1-1

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team continued to play outstanding defense on Saturday in its second game of the season.

A talented Saginaw Valley State team had just one shot on goal in the game, but the Cardinals converted it for a goal as they claimed a 1-0 victory over the Golden Knights in a non-conference game at McConnell Family Stadium.

Coach Billy Colton's Gannon team, ranked No. 7 in Division II, opened the season with a 5-0 victory over Lake Erie College on Thursday. In that game, the Knights outshot the Storm 23-4, including a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal.

On Saturday, Gannon again had the edge in shots, outshooting the Cardinals 15-3.

However, Saginaw took advantage of its one shot on goal 22 minutes and 46 seconds into the second half. On a corner kick from the left side, Jordan Murray sent a kick to the center of the box, where Alberto Herranz headed the ball to the left. Jayden Cameron gathered the ball and sent a shot across to the far right side of the net for the game's only goal.

It was the first goal Gannon had allowed in 157 minutes this season.

Gannon kept the pressure on, compiling 10 shots in the second half, but each time Saginaw Valley was able to thwart the attack. Nick Kay made five saves in goal for the Cardinals.

What's next:
Gannon will go on the road to meet Ashland on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Knights will then host Wilmington on Soctember Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 14, at noon.
