Golden Knights Rebound from First Loss with Impressive Win at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Gannon men's soccer team rebounded from it first loss of the season with an impressive showing at Ashland on Wednesday evening. Playing in their first road match of the season, the Golden Knights pulled away for a 4-0 win.
 
Ashland came in with a 1-1-0 record and was looking to sweep the PSAC's preseason favorites. The Eagles handed defending PSAC champion and PSAC East favorite Millersville a 1-0 defeat on Sunday, winning at Millersville no less.
 
Gannon improved to 2-1-0 after taking a 1-0 lead at the half, then scoring in the first minute of the second half. Head coach Billy Colton's squad twice in a span of 57 seconds late in the half.
 
The Golden Knights now return home for back-to-back home matches, beginning on Saturday, September 14 when Wilmington (Del.) visits McConnell Family Stadium.   
 
Freshman Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway/) scored a pair of goals to lead seventh-ranked Gannon to an impressive 5-0 win over Lake Erie on Thursday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

How it Happened:
  • After opening his Gannon career with a pair of goals in the season opener vs. Lake Erie, freshman Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway/) scored one goal and assisted on another. He was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on Monday. Lauvstad got Gannon on the scoreboard at 24"03 when he took a pass from midfield and scored on a breakaway, firing a shot from the right side into the left corner of the goal. It was his third goal of the young season.
  • The score remained 1-0 at the half but Gannon needed just 18 seconds into the second half to add a second goal. Lauvstad assisted on t6he goal as the Golden Knights moved the ball up the right side and the freshman fed Shota Toyama (Kanagawa, Japan/Tama) in front of the net for a 2-0 lead at 45:18.
  • Gannon made it 3-0 at the 78:34 mark and added a fourth goal at 79:31. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) assisted on both goals. The first found feed Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) in front of the goal, with the senior scoring his first goal of the season on a shot from point-blank range.
  • Freshman Kasper Alfei Saebo (Hamar, Norway/) concluded the scoring with his first career goal off a free kick from the right side by Orten.
By the Numbers:
  • Both teams finished with 15 shots but Gannon definitely had the better opportunities, showing 11 shots on goal to five. The Golden Knights also had six corner kicks to four for Ashland.
  • Abdo Salem Abdullah (Kristiansand, Norway) made his first start in goal. The freshman from Norway was credited with five saves while recoding the shutout.
  • Gannon has now allowed just one goal in three matches.
Next for the Golden Knights:
Gannon plays its next two contests at McConnell Family Stadium. Wilmington (Del.) visits Gannon on Saturday, September 14 for a 12 noon match. The Wildcats are 0-2-1 following a 4-2 loss to West Chester on Wednesday. The Golden Knights then host Adelphi on Tuesday, September 17.
