Strong Play in Goal by Moraes, Hyde Goal Leads No. 15 Golden Knights to 1-1 Tie at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Playing under duress for the second match in a row the Gannon men's soccer team was able to forge a 1-1 tie at Slippery Rock on Wednesday afternoon. The tie leaves the 15th-ranked Golden Knights at 4-2-2 overall and 0-0-2 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock is now 2-2-2 and was playing its PSAC West opener.

For the second match in a row Gannon found itself playing a man down for an extended period. On Saturday standout defender Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000) was sent off with a red card with 35 minutes remaining in the match against Seton Hill.

The red card meant Corti had to sit out today's match. The Golden Knights grabbed an early 1-0 lead but the complexion of the match changed when another defender, Gonzalo Perez (Madrid, Spain/Virgen de Europa), received a red card with 16:30 remaining in the first half. That left the Golden Knights playing a man down for over 60 minutes, and without two starters in the back row.

Slippery Rock eventually took advantage of the situation to tie the game in the 56th minute. Neither team scored the rest of the way as Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular) came up with several stellar saves in goal and head coach Billy Colton dipped deep into his roster to hold off SRU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon got on the board just over five minutes into the match when James Pool's (Hastings, England/Claverham) short pass was taken by Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) in front of the goal. Hyde took a dribble and fired a left-footed shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead at 5:47. It was Hyde's second goal of the season with Pool now showing four assists.
  • For the second match in a row Gannon was forced to play short-handed, this time for the final 16:30 of the first half plus the entire second half. This time Gonzalo Perez (Madrid, Spain/Virgen de Europa) was awarded a red card.
  • Slippery Rock scored the equalizer at 55:31. Ignacio Rulian's cross to the right side just went over the head of a Gannon defender to Luke Gildea. The SRU captain gathered in the pass and from close range shot into the far left corner of the goal past Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular).
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Playing a man up for two-thirds of the match, Slippery Rock dominated statistically. The Rock had 17 shots compared to seven for the Golden Knights. SRU had six shots on goal while Gannon's only shot on goal was Hyde's shot into the back of the net.
  • The Rock had 14 corner kicks while Gannon was never awarded a corner kick.
  • Goalkeeper Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular) enjoyed a strong effort in goal. The redshirt sophomore, in his first season at Gannon after transferring from CSU Bakersfield, had a season-high five saves. That included a pair of spectacular efforts, one in the final minute of the first half and another with just over 15 minutes to play.
NEXT FOR THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
  • Gannon returns to action on Saturday, October 5 hosting Lock Haven. The match gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
