Benedict Scores Late Goal as No. 13 Golden Knights Fall 3-1 to Adelphi

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon and Adelphi met on the pitch for the first time in men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium, with the visiting Panthers coming away with a 3-1 victory.

A week ago both teams were among teams "receiving votes" in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25. The Golden Knights proceeded to win back-to-back games to climb back into the rankings this week in 13th place.

Like Gannon, Adelphi had faced a tough schedule as well. The Panthers came in with back-to-back losses. Gannon falls to 3-2-0 with the loss while Adelphi, picked to finish second to defending national champion Franklin Pierce, in the Northeast 10 Conference, is now 2-2-1.

How it Happened:
  • Gannon had numerous scoring opportunities in the early minutes but were unable to find the back of the net against Adelphi goalkeeper Santiaga Arango. In fact, the Golden Knights held an 8-2 lead in shots at the half but trailed by a 2-0 margin.
  • The Panthers took advantage of a turnover to open the scoring at the 18:44 mark. They added to the lead with a second goal at 36:55 as Matthew Murphy fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal on a tough angle from the right win.
  • Leading 2-0 heading into the second half Adelphi was able to pack the defensive end. Gannon pressed ahead early without any luck, then went an extended period without a scoring threat.
  • Adelphi boosted the lead to 3-0 with a breakaway goal at 62:11 by Richard DeBrosse.
  • Gannon averted a second shutout this season on a goal by RJ Benedict (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) at 87:42. Benedict gathered in a rebound off a shot by James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) and headed it in. It was the redshirt senior's second career goal.
By the Numbers:
  • Gannon held a 14-6 advantage in shots and also had seven corner kicks to just one for the Panthers.
  • The 2-0 deficit for Gannon at the half is the first time Gannon trailed by two goals at the half since the PSAC semifinals vs. West Chester last November. It is just the second time since the PSAC quarterfinals in 2022, a span of 28 matches.
Next for the Golden Knights: Wednesday, September 25 vs. Post at Lock Haven University, 12 noon
