Freshmen Abbett, Bowers Finish One-Two to Pace Women's Runners to Second-Place Showing

BETHANY, W.Va. – The future looks bright for the Gannon women's cross country team. With a pair freshmen harriers finishing one-two Gannon picked up a second-place finish at the Bethany Invitational on Saturday morning. A total of seven teams competed.

Grove City came away with the team title, finishing with 50 points as six of the first 14 runners were Wolverines. Gannon was next with 65 points, buoyed by a first-place showing by freshman Alexis Abbett (Sharpsburg, Pa./Aquinas Academy) plus a second-place finish for Emily Bowers (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek).

Abbett covered the 6K Bethany College Cross Country Course in a time of 23:43. That was three seconds faster than teammate Bowers.

All told, four of Gannon's five point producers were freshmen. Veteran Elissa Scheel (Medina, Ohio/Highland), a senior, was the third runner across the finish line for the Golden Knights, coming in 17th with a time of 25:26.

Freshmen Maggie Mahoney (Erie, Pa./Fairview) and Brooke Wissinger (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) were 24th and 28th, respectively. Mahoney had a time of 26:46 and Wissinger 26:57.

Gannon returns to action in two weeks competing in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, September 28.
