Bowers to Compete in NCAA Div. II Women's Cross Country National Championships on Saturday

Sophomore is Gannon's first women's harrier to qualify

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University's Emily Bowers (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) will compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, November 22.  The national championship race is set to start at 11 a.m. ET in Kenosha, Wisc. The women's harriers will run a 6K over the Wayne E. Dannehl National XC Course.

Bowers became Gannon's first-ever women's runner to reach the National Championship while competing in the Atlantic Regional at Lock Haven, Pa. on November 8. After winning the PSAC championship the sophomore nearly completed the sweep with the regional crown.

She covered the 6K course in a time of 21:22.5. That was just shy of the time posted by Glenville State's Natalie Barr who crossed at 21:22.0.

"As the first student-athlete in Gannon Cross Country history to qualify for the National Championships, Emily is breaking new ground for our program," stressed head coach Rob Ahrens. "The outpouring of support from the Gannon community has been tremendous, and we're grateful for everyone rallying behind her. She's delivered strong, steady performances all season and heads into nationals with well-earned confidence and momentum."

Bowers joins Joseph Westrick and Ryan Garich as the only Gannon runners to qualify for the NCAA National Championships. Westrick competed in 2018 and '19 while Garich qualified in 2019.

Thirty-four teams were selected to participate in the NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship along with another 26 individuals. The top 40 runners to cross the finish line on Saturday earn All-American honors.
