High-Scoring Golden Knights Improve to 3-1-0 with 5-2 Win over Wilmington (Del.)

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team continued its high-scoring ways on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Wilmington (Del.) at McConnell Family Stadium. The match was the first of back-to-back home games and boosted Gannon to 3-1-0 overall while Wilmington dipped to 0-3-1.
Five different players scored goals for the Golden Knights, including freshman Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway/), who now has five in his first four career matches. The Golden Knights have now scored 14 goals in four matches

How it Happened:
  • While Gannon was controlling the action the match was scoreless until midway through the first half. That's when a Wilmington player received his second yellow card and the Wildcats were forced to play a man down. It would change the complexion of the game.
  • It didn't take long for Gannon to capitalize. The Golden Knights scored three goals in less than four minutes and led 3-0 at the half. Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) started the scoring at the 27:34 mark assisted by Kasper Alfei Saebo (Hamar, Norway/). Orten took a long pass up the left wing and found the right corner of the goal from 15 yards out for his second goal of the season.
  • The lead grew to 2-0 at 29:23 thanks to the first career goal for Alander Soares (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Escola Estadual de Ensino Medio Santa Catarina). The freshman from Brazil fired an initial shot that was stopped by the Wilmington goalie, with the ball bounding right back to him. His second attempt was true from 20 yards out.
  • Another freshman got into the act to make it 3-0 at 31:43. Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway/), who is off to a fast start with five goals, took a pair of perfect passes from Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) and Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena), with Aanberg's cross from the right win finding Lauvstad wide open on the left side of the goal.
  • The Wildcats cut the deficit to 3-1 on a penalty kick by Theo Faillon at 72:27. The goal initially energized Wilmington, but Gannon regained a three-goal advantage at 77:46 and made it 5-1 with ten minutes remaining. The first goal was the first career goal for Carl Dorner (Skødstrup, Sweden/), who took advantage of a misplay by the Wilmington goal to find an open net. The final goal was the first goal of the season for Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) who scored off a feed from Gabriel Delin (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymansium).
  • Wilmington's second goal actually was courtesy of a Golden Knight defender. Trying to clear a ball it was sent into the Gannon goal for an own goal at 82:03.
By the Numbers:
  • Gannon dominated the statistics, holding a 26-10 advantage in shots. The Golden Knights held a 14-4 edge at the half and then outshot the Wildcats 12-6 over the final 45 minutes.
  • The Golden Knights held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • Andres Moraes made his third start in goal. The transfer from CSU-Bakersfield was credited with a pair of saves.
Next for the Golden Knights: Tuesday, September 17 vs. Adelphi, 1:00 p.m.
