Personius, Malena Pace Golden Knights to First Place Tie at Bethany Invitational

Freshmen class plays huge role as well

BETHANY, W.Va. – With a lineup featuring numerous freshmen the Gannon men's cross country team raced for the second time in 2024 and tied for first in the Bethany Invitational. A total of nine teams and 100 runners competed in the event.
 
Gannon and West Liberty both ended with 45 points. Lawrence Tech finished third in the event with 50 points and actually had the top two runners to cross the finish line. The Hilltoppers were determined as the winner since their top runner was third and Gannon's fifth.
 
Hunter Assenmacher of Larence Tech covered the 8K Bethany College Cross Country Course in a time of 26:06 to finish. He edged teammate Luke Droz by six seconds.
 
Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) paced the Golden Knights with a fifth-place showing. The graduate student posted a time of 26:37. Junior Luke Malena (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) was right behind in sixth place at 26:38.
 
Lauge Rasmussen (Virum, Denmark/Oregard Gynbasium), a sophomore, and freshman Bradyn Rusch (Valley View, Ohio/Cuyahoga Heights) also garnered top ten finishes Rasmussen came in ninth at 27:24. Rusch led a pack of Gannon first-year runners as the next six of the next seven Gannon finishers were all freshmen. He came in tenth (27:38).
 
Freshman Robert Tang (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) rounded out the Golden Knights scorers with a 15th-place showing (27:51). Head coach Rob Ahrens entered 13 runners in all.
 
Gannon returns to action in two weeks competing in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted by Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, September 28.
