Women's Cross Country Adds Five Recruits for 2024

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University head cross country coach Rob Ahrens has announced his incoming recruits for the 2024 season. He has added five freshmen to a list of eight returnees for the women's cross country team.

"We are so excited to be welcoming this class of 2024 to our team," related Ahrens. "With a lot of talent graduating last year, this group will have plenty of opportunities to step up and contribute in a big way. I believe there are some special athletes in this group and each of these ladies will contribute positively to our team during their time here at Gannon."

Ahrens will begin his third season at the helm of the Golden Knights on Friday, September 6 when Gannon hosts the Race in the Park in Fairview.

Here's a look at the five incoming women's cross country recruits.

Alexis Abbett (Sharpsburg, Pa./Aquinas Academy) (Sharpsburg, Pa. / Aquinas Academy) – four-year varsity letter winner at Aquinas Academy in Pittsburgh in both cross country and track & field … named the MVP for both teams all four years … was named the Aquinas Academy Girls Athlete of the Year as a senior … set numerous school records, including the 5K, 3200 and the mile … intends to major in Business.
 
Emily Bowers (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) (Silver Creek, N.Y. / Silver Creek) – finished in the Top 5 at the NYSPHSAA Section VI Cross Country Championship (2020-2023) while competing for Silver Creek (N.Y.) High School … qualified for the NYSPHSAA Cross Country State Championships in 2023 … served as a captain for both the cross country (2022 and '23) and track & field teams (2024) and was a CCAA First on Team Award recipient for Cross Country (2021-2023) and CCAA First on Team Award for Track (2024) … was a top 3 finalist at NYSPHAA Section VI Outdoor Track and Field Championship … set school record in the Girls Outdoor Track and Field 3000-meters in 2024 … earned Silver Creek Cross Country Black Knight Award (2022-2023) and was Silver Creek Central School Scholar Athlete Hall of Fame Inductee in 2024 … CCAA Sportsmanship Award recipient in 2024 … outstanding student who was the Silver Creek Central School Valedictorian … received NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award (2020-2024) and All-WNY Scholar Athlete Award (2024) … member of National Honor Society (2022-2024) and received College Board National Rural and Small Town Academic Excellence Award, Business and Marketing Honor Society (2023-2024) other awards include NYS Comptroller Academic Achievement Award, NYS Academic Excellence Award, NYS Seal of Civic Readiness, NYS Seal of Biliteracy … intends to major in Physical Therapy (3+3).
 
Maggie Mahoney (Erie, Pa./Fairview) (Erie, Pa. / Fairview) – competed in cross country and track & field at nearby Fairview High School … competed at District 10 Championships for cross country and track (300 meter hurdles and 4x4 relay) … academic honors include Honors/AP Curriculum; Health and Science Academy: Scientific Research Track; Class of 2024 Spanish Award … intends to major in Biochemistry.
 
Doris Taucher (Akron, Ohio/Chardon) (Akron, Ohio / Chardon) -- competed for head coach Julie Cole at Chardon High School … was a two-year varsity letter winner in cross country and a three-year varsity letter winner in track & field … recipient of Sportsmanship Award and Most Improved Award … a five-time All-Conference academic award honoree, three times in track and two times in cross country … intends to major in Biochemistry.
 
Brooke Wissinger (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) (Fombell, Pa / Riverside) -- a four-time WPIAL cross country and track & field competitor and a three-time WPIAL track & field medalist for Riverside (Pa.) High School .... four-time WPIAL cross country medalist and three-time PIAA State cross country qualifier, along with one time in track & field … MAC Athlete of the Year nominee … won the Walter Ziegler Track and Field Athlete Award and the Riverside Track and Field Scholarship … President of the National Honor Society and President of Student Council … also President of Senior Student Body and Salutatorian … won the Rose Kaufman Scholarship … intends to major in Pre-Medicine with a Biology focus.
