Vega Breaks Career Record for Steals as Gannon Drops Two at D'Youville

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Gannon baseball team played a doubleheader against D'Youville on Tuesday afternoon. The original schedule had the two teams meeting for a single nine-inning game but after a game last week at Gannon had to be postponed the two arranged the twinbill at Niagara University's Sal Maglie Field.

Unfortunately the Golden Knights lost both games in the late innings to drop to 5-22. D'Youville improved to 16-15 after winning the first game 8-7 in nine innings and take the nightcap 7-4 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Gannon now returns to the PSAC wars with a four-game set vs. Mercyhurst. The two teams meet on Friday, April 12 at McConnell Family Stadium followed by two more at Mercyhurst the next day.

Game 1 – D'Youville 8, Gannon 7 (9 innings)
The Golden Knights suffered a heart-breaking end in a game that they originally sent into extra innings with two outs in the top of the seventh. Gannon trailed 5-3 entering the seventh inning but knotted the score at 5-5 with a pair of runs, both after the first two batters were out. Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) was hit by a pitch and Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) followed with a single to center. Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) drove in Gagnon with a single to left and Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) tied the game with a single up the middle. Gannon grabbed a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth on Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) ground rule double to right field with two outs in the top of the eighth. The Saints would knot the score at 7-7 after Bemis retired the first two batters. A pair of singles placed runners on first and second. Both moved up on a wild pitch and the tying run scored on a passed ball. Bielanin gave Gannon a 9-8 lead when he led off the top of the ninth with his first home run of the season. The Golden Knights would leave runners on first and second. Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) relieved Bemis to begin the bottom of the ninth and retired the first two batters. The lefthander hit the next batter and then Billy Morris ended the game with a two-run homer. Gannon finished with 13 hits with Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Wible and Bemis were 2-for-4 with Wible driving in two runs and Bemis one. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) also went 2-for-4.

Game 2 – D'Youville 7, Gannon 4
The Golden Knights suffered another late-game loss in game number two as D'Youville scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Alex Dzimian had the big blow with a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs with two outs. Gannon scored once in the top of the seventh on a Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) ground out. Gannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a half inning thanks to a pair of D'Youville errors.  The Saints scored a run in the bottom of the inning then took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the second. Gannon knotted the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth thanks to Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). The senior second baseman singled to right, stole second and third, and scored on an errant throw to third. In the process he set the career record for stolen bases. He added another steal in the seventh to give him three in the game and 71 for his career. Gannon was limited to four hits with Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) going 2-for-4.
