ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team dropped the first two game of its four-game series with crosstown-rival Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field. The Lakers won the first game by an 8-1 score and claimed the nightcap 9-2.

With questionable weather on tap for Sunday the two teams will play the second of their two doubleheaders on Monday, April 15 at McConnell Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1 – Mercyhurst 8, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first but Mercyhurst answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) sacrifice fly drove in Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic), who had reached on an error. The Lakers' big blow in the bottom of the frame was a three-run homer by Mitchell Grosch. Mercyhurst chased starter Kieran Versaw-Barnes (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) with three runs in the third and added an unearned run in the fourth. Gannon managed just two hits but the Golden Knights limited Mercyhurst to five base hits. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) had singles for Gannon.

Game 2 – Mercyhurst 9, Gannon 2
Four Gannon errors led to four unearned runs, three of those in a five-run first inning for Mercyhurst. Gannon made it 5-1 in the second when Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) singled, moved all the way to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Reece Colvin's (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) RBI groundout. The Lakers made it 9-1 with three runs in the third and another in the fourth. Gannon added its second run in the seventh on an RBI single by Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted), scoring Colvin who had reached on a single. Gannon was limited to those three hits. A bright was Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), who threw the final 3.2 innings allowing a single run with five strikeouts.
