Mateo's Low Round Paces Gannon to Dominating Lead after Day Two of PSAC Championships

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Gannon women's golf team is 18 holes away from an unprecedented fifth straight PSAC championship after widening its lead on Saturday on day number two. The 2024 PSAC Women's Golf Championship is being played at Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown, Pa. The Golden Knights ended the opening day of competition with a commanding 16-stroke lead, and after 36 holes that lead now sits at 39 strokes.

Head coach Scott Stano's Golden Knights opened with a 306 aggregate score and on Saturday posted a score of 301. Their two-day total of 40-over par 616 is 39 strokes ahead of second-place Millersville. The Marauders posted Saturday's second-best score of 319 to total 655 (+79) over 36 holes. Mercyhurst fell from second to third at 82-over par 658.  A total of 11 teams are competing along with three golfers from Shepherd.

Gannon has the top golfers on the individual leaderboard and three in the top five. Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) continues to hold the lead as the junior looks to repeat as the PSAC medalist. After an opening round 1-under par 71 with seven birdies, Petersen shot a 2-over par 74 on day two for a 36-hole total of 1-over par 145.

But the story of the day was teammate Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola). The freshmen shot a 2-under-par 70. That is a new low round for a Gannon golfer in the PSAC championship and is tied for the second-lowest round in Gannon history. Petersen owns the record with a 68 at the 2023 Clarion Fall Invitational.
Coupled with a 77 in the opening round Mateo sits at 3-over par 147, two strokes behind Petersen. The native of Spain shot even-par 35 on the front nine with a pair of birdies then added three more birdies on the back nine while also shooting 35, 2-under par. She was the model of consistency with five birdies and just three bogeys.

Petersen, meanwhile, had one of just six rounds under 80 on the day with a 74. A native of Denmark, she battled back after a triple-bogey on the opening hole. She would shoot even-par the rest of the front nine for a 38, then came in at 1-under par 36 on the back nine. In all her round included four birdies.

Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) also resides in the top five as the junior followed up a 78 with an 81 on Saturday for a 36-hole total of 15-over par 159 for a tie for fifth place. Martinez had two birdies on the day. A year ago she finished second.

Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) is just outside the top ten as the senior is in a two-way tie for 11th place at 185. She followed up an 80 on Friday with an 85 on Saturday that featured three birdies. Freshman Victoria Colmenares (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/ICL Academy) completes the Gannon lineup with a 36-hole total of 172 after shooting an 89 on Saturday.

Now 18 holes remain on Sunday for the Golden Knights to win a fifth straight PSAC Championship. No team had ever won more than three titles in a row prior to last year.
