ERIE, Pa. –
Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) tied the Gannon women's golf program's low round at Whispering Woods Golf Club with a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday to help the Golden Knights finish second in the Gannon Spring Invitational.
Petersen
The junior placed second in the individual tournament with the two-day total of 7-over 151. She finished with six birdies – three on each nine – as she shot 2-under 34 and even-par 36 to finish with 70. She tied tied
Ana Maestro's (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) previous low round of 70 at Whispering Woods.
Led by individual champion LeeAnn Harker (even-par 144), Ashland won the tournament with a 614 total. Gannon moved up one spot on Sunday on its home course as the Knights finished with 626, thanks to a sparkling 304 in the final round.
As if that weren't enough, Gannon's second team placed fourth in the eight-team tournament with 666, thanks to a pair of 1-over 73s by
Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Maestro. Franklin Pierce closed at third place win the team race with 644.
Gannon had three top-10 finishers and six golfers among the top 13. McClain placed third with 152 (79-73), and freshman
Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola) finished fourth with 153 (81-72). Maestro tied for 11th with 160 (87-73), and
Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and
Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) tied for 13th with 161 totals.
Petersen set the program record last fall with a 4-under-par 68 on Oct. 16 at Pinecrest Country Club in Brookville, Pa.
She threatened that record on Sunday when she birdied Nos. 2, 3 and 7 on the front nine and then birdied Nos. 10, 13, and 15. At the point, she was 5-under par. Her big day continues another standout season for Petersen, who was the PSAC Freshman of the Year in 2021-22 and the PSAC Golfer of the Year in 2022-23.
Mateo had three birdies and 14 pars on her way to the 72, while McClain sank two birdies and 13 pars for her 73. Maestro had two birdies and 14 pars on Sunday.
Gannon also celebrated Senior Day as
Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and
Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) were recognized.
Coach
Scott Stano's Gannon team will now prepare for the PSAC Championships as the Golden Knights seek their fifth consecutive conference title. They will open play in the PSAC tournament on Friday, April 26, at Berkleigh Golf Club in Kutztown.
