Gannon women's golf team 2 strokes out of lead at Gannon Spring Invitational

Andrea Martinez leads Gannon with 78 on Day 1 of two-day tournament

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's golf team is just two shots out of the lead through the first day of the two-day Gannon Spring Invitational on Saturday.
 
Junior Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) shot a 78 to lead the Golden Knights in windy, wet, and cold conditions at Whispering Woods Golf Club. Gannon finished the day with a 34-over-par 322 to close the day two strokes behind co-leaders Ashland (320) and Franklin Pierce (320).
 
Martinez moved into a tie for second place. She had three birdies on the front nine and was very consistent on the back nine, where she had two birdies and five pars for an even-par 36.
 
Junior Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) and freshman Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola) each shot 81 on Saturday to move into a tie for 10th place. Petersen had two birdies during her round, while Mateo was consistent with nine pars. Senior Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) is tied for 18th after shooting an 82.

Gannon's B Team is in fifth place in the eight-team field with 349, thanks to a 7-over 79 by McClain. The sophomore was one of the few players to not have a double bogey on Saturday as she finished with a birdie and nine pars. Senior Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) added an 87.
