Gannon, Pitt-Johnstown split PSAC West doubleheader on Friday

Golden Knights win Game 1 on Carson Wible's two-run single in the 11th inning

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Gannon and Pitt-Johnstown were scheduled to play two seven-inning games in a PSAC West doubleheader on Friday at Point Stadium.

By the time they were done, GU and UPJ had combined to play 20 innings over almost 6 hours. The final result was a dramatic doubleheader split.

Carson Wible's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) two-run single in the top of the 11th inning gave Gannon a 9-7 victory in Game 1, and Zach Ramach's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Pitt-Johnstown a 3-2 comeback victory  in Game 2.

Gannon moved to 3-16 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC West, while UPJ moved to 11-13 and 2-4.

Here's a look at the two games:

Game 1:

Gannon appeared to be on its way to a Game 1 victory when the Golden Knights scored three times in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

However, Gannon's bullpen could not hold the lead. UPJ's Devon Boyles homered to start the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Mountain Cats went on to score runs on an single, hit batsman, and a walk to tie the score at 7-7 and force extra innings.

The score remained tied at 7 until the 11th inning. With one out, Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) singled and Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) doubled to put runners on third. Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) then ripped a two-run single through the left side to give Gannon a 9-7 lead.

Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) then made his first pitching appearance of the year after dealing with an injury. The last of eight GU pitchers, Schott set down the side in order in the bottom of the 11th inning to record the save. That preserved the pitching victory for Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) (1-0), who pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out three.

Offensively, Gannon was led by Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted), who had three hits and three RBIs and scored twice. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) also had three hits, while Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside), Colvin, and Bemis had two hits apiece as GU finished with 14 hits. Costello, Bemis, Colvin, and Bielanin each had a double.

Game 2:

Friday's second game was quite different from the opener. The teams were scoreless for the first eight innings.

Both starting pitchers held the teams off the scoreboard for seven innings. Gannon's Kieran Versaw-Barnes (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) continued his fine start to the season by allowing only five hits while striking out 11 and walking none on 95 pitches.

In his past four outings, Versaw-Barnes has allowed only four earned runs in 28 innings while lowering his season ERA to 2.90. He has 34 strikeouts in those 28 innings.

Meanwhile, UPJ's Ben Tomb held Gannon scoreless on two hits through seven innings.

Gannon finally broke the scoreless tie in the ninth when Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) hit an RBI single to score Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe). GU then took a 2-0 lead when Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) scored on a throwing error.

Two Gannon pitchers could not hold the Mountain Cats in the bottom of the ninth as Alex Ebeling hit a two-run single up the middle to tie the score and Ramach won the game with an RBI single to right field.

Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) (0-2) took the loss for Gannon in relief of Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), who was credited with the first two runs.

What's ahead:

Gannon had been scheduled to host Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, but a forecast of rain forced the teams to postpone that doubleheader until Monday at 1 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
