Gannon Plays Chilly Pair of Games to Wrap Up Four Games with IUP

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team opened its home season for PSAC West play hosting Indiana (Pa.) in a chilly doubleheader on Sunday. A young Golden Knights team proved they are a never-say-die group, but it did not equate to victories. The Golden Knights dropped the opener 7-5 then fell in the nightcap by a 12-5 score. Gannon is now 2-15 and 0-4 in the PSAC West while IUP improved to 11-4 and 4-0, respectively.

On Friday the two teams met in a doubleheader in Johnstown, Pa. with the first game going 14 innings. That plus the game two starter failing to get out of the first inning left head coach DJ Cannon with a taxed bullpen.

Gannon next has a four-game set with Pitt-Johnstown. The first two will be hosted by UPJ on Friday, March 29 before the teams return to McConnell Family Stadium for a pair on Saturday, March 30.

Game 1: IUP 7, Gannon 5
The Crimson Hawks led 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning before Gannon put a real scare into them. The Golden Knights would push across five runs on six hits. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) drove in the first run with a one-out single. Following a strikeout, Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) plated a pair of runs with a two-run single to right making it 7-3. A wild pitch plated another run and Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) double scored Kerestes. Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was hit by a pitch but a flyout ended the inning with the tying runners on base. Gannon actually outhit the Crimson Hawks 11-9 with four players having two hits apiece. Kerestes was 2-for-4 with a 2 RBI while Bemis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) were each 2-for-4.

Game 2: IUP 12, Gannon 5
Gannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Carson Wible's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) two-run single. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) breezed the IUP lineup the first three innings but the roof caved in in the fourth inning. The Crimson Hawks chased Smith with seven runs on five hits with 13 batters going to the plate. Gannon answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-3. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) singled with one out and eventually came around to score on a Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) single. IUP added single runs in the fifth and sixth and three runs in the seventh to make it 12-3. The Golden Knights pushed across two runs in the seventh. Kerestes drove in a run with an RBI single and Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) added an RBI single with an out. Mullins ended the day with three hits in four at bats while Wible ended with a pair of RBIs.
