Petersen Turns in Sixth Top-Five Finish Coming in Third at Saginaw Valley State Spring Invite

Gannon battles strong winds to finish sixth out of 14 teams

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The Gannon women's golf team battled a string field and tough weather conditions to post a sixth-place finish at the Saginaw Valley State Spring Invite on Sunday. A total of 14 teams competed in the 36-hole events at Cherry Blossom Golf Course.
 
The golfers were greeted by gusting winds that approached 30 mph creating wind chills in the 40's. It made for some higher scores but the Golden Knights basically matched their first-day score of 318 with a second-day aggregate of 319, good for a 637 total, 61-over par.
 
After leading by nine shots following the opening 18 holes McKendree pulled away to win by 12 strokes over Ferris State. McKendree finished at 37-over par 613 despite shooting 21 strokes over the opening-day score. Ferris State came in at 625 (+49). Saginaw Valley State and Davenport tied for third at 626, 50-over par.
 
Martina Hicks of McKendree finished as the individual medalist with a 149 total, 5-over par, thanks to a second-day round of 76. Tiffin's Lisa Marie Schumacher also shot 76 to finish a stroke broke at 150 (+6).
 
Gannon's Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) recorded her sixth top five finish of the season, moving up from a tie for sixth after the opening 18 holes to place third. The junior followed up an opening round 74 with a 77 for a 36-hole total of 151 (+7). She was one of 19 golfers out of 85 total players to manage a round in the 70's.
 
Petersen's round included three birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, both par 4's.
 
Gannon's next two golfers on the leaderboard were playing as individuals. Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished in a tie for 15th after adding an 8-over 80 to her opening round 77 for a 36-hole total of 157 (+13). The sophomore was able to minimize the damage under the adverse conditions with just one double bogey.
 
Freshman Victoria Colmenares (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/ICL Academy) also finished in the top 20 in a tie for 17th. She added a second straight 79 for a 158 total, 14-over par. She had one of Gannon's six birdies on the day with a two on the par-3 third hole.
 
Gannon's other two birdies were courtesy of Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep). The senior birdied two of the three par-5's, the 494-yard fifth hole and the 481-yard 14th hole. White would end the day with 80 to finish at 17-over 160.
 
The Golden Knights will return to action on April 8-9 in NC4K Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio.
