Baseball Opens 2024 Season with Chilly Doubleheader vs. Grand Valley State in Xenia, Ohio

XENIA, Ohio – A youthful Gannon baseball team opened the 2024 campaign on Friday with the first of two doubleheaders against Grand Valley State. The games took place in a chilly Xenia, Ohio at Athletes in Action Park.

The Golden Knights dropped the first game by a 10-2 score and the second by a 12-1 final. The two teams will meet again on Sunday with the twinbill beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Game 1: Grand Valley State 10, Gannon 2
The Golden Knights had the opening game jitters as a lineup with just two starters returning from last year committed five turnovers. The Lakers, a team that was 32-21 a year ago, pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first, followed by five runs in the third and three in the fifth. Gannon scored its two runs in the top of the sixth. Brady Lane (Trafford, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and Cam Marciniak (Johnsonburg, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) followed with a single. Following a pair of outs Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) plated both Lane and Marciniak with a two-run double.

Game 2: Grand Valley State 12, Gannon 1
Playing in the evening with a front coming through the two teams played under brutally cold conditions. Grand Valley State scored in six of the seven innings with a six-run top of the sixth breaking the game open. Gannon averted a shutout with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshmen Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) and Justin Weaver (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) walked. Dom Pearson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) hit a pinch hit single to load the bases and Brendan Koroly's (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) RBI groundout plated the run.
