Montano Repeats as PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference today announced its weekly award winners in men's basketball, with Gannon's Mike Montano (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) repeating as the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. It's the third time the freshman has earned the award.

Montano played a key role in a pair of victories as Gannon stretched its winning streak to 12 games while improving to 23-2 overall and 17-2 in the PSAC West. He posted double-doubles in both victories while coming off the bench.

Gannon held off Slippery Rock on Wednesday 94-91. The 6-foot-7 guard forward had 13 points (6-of-13 FGs, 1-of-2 FTs) and 12 rebounds with two assists and a block in 26 minutes.

On Saturday Gannon recorded the season sweep of Clarion thanks to a 100-81 victory. Montano played 21 minutes, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He made 6-of-10 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws, adding three steals and an assist. The double-double was his third of the season.

The native of Alexandria, Va. has played a key role in the team's success as a freshman and was particularly important this week with starter Zachary Hobbs (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesa) out with an injury. Montano is averaging 8.2 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding (6.5 rpg.) and blocked shots (23), all while averaging just under 16 minutes per game.

Montano and the Golden Knights return to action on Wednesday, February 21 playing at crosstown rival Mercyhurst.
