Strickland Reaches 100 Career Goals as Gannon Wins Twice in Robinette Invitational

Golden Knights pick up wins over Chapman, Penn State Behrend to improve to 4-5

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's water polo team completed the first day of competition in the Robinette Invitational with a pair of wins. Mercyhurst is hosting the tournament at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center.

In the morning Gannon held off Chapman for a 9-7 win. They returned to the pool in the afternoon and handed Penn State Behrend a 15-6 defeat. The Golden Knights improved to 4-5 with the two victories.

The Behrend match also saw Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) reach a milestone. The junior entered the weekend with 98 career career goals. She scored once against Chapman, then reached 100 career goals when she found the back of the cage in the first period vs. Behrend. She added a second goal in the fourth period for 101 career goals.

Gannon is back in action on Sunday with a pair of matches. The Golden Knights play Washington & Jefferson at 8:30 a.m. then wrap up the tournament with a 2:00 p.m. match vs. host Mercyhurst.

Chapman took a 1-0 lead but Gannon led 3-1 after the first period, with Selena Martinez (Fullerton, Calif./Buena Park) scoring twice, The lead was 6-3 at the half after Ellie Velasco (Bronx, Calif./Arlington) scored on a penalty shot with 1:11 remaining. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored her 99th career goal midway through the period. Gannon built its lead to 8-4 in the third period before Chapman scored three straight goals to pull to within 807. The lone goal in the fourth period was courtesy of Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) on the power play with six minutes remaining. Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) made the two-goal lead stand up. She recorded four saves in the period and nine in the match.

The Golden Knights took a 4-1 lead after one period, highlighted by Jade Strickland's (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) 100th career goal. The lead grew to 8-3 at the half as Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) scored two of her team-high four goals. Gannon led 11-5 after three periods before outscoring the Lions 4-1 in the final period.
