Kemp Joins Men's Basketball Class of 2024

ERIE, Pa. – Last fall Gannon University men's basketball coach Jordan Fee announced his first three recruits for the Class of 2024. On Tuesday the first-year coach added a fourth recruit with Mason Kemp signing a national letter of intent to join the Golden Knights.

Kemp is a 6'7" forward from Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kansas. He has been rated as one of the top forwards in the state this season after earning second team All-Sunflower League honors as a junior along with honorable honorable mention Class 6 All-State recognition. He averaged 12 points, 7.2 rebounds and one block per game while shooting 61.8 percent from the field and 78.5 percent from the line. Mill Valley finished at 15-6 last year while reaching the substate semifinals.

But what makes Kemp equally unique is he is also an all-state performer in football. He helped Mill Valley to its fourth straight Kansas state championship in the fall and was a KHSHSAA Class 5A All-State Honorable Mention selection at offensive tackle.

"Mason is an outstanding young man of character and comes from a great family," related Fee.  "He is a unique dual-sport athlete having played offensive tackle for his four-time state championship Mill Valley football team as well as a playing an integral piece on what is a high-level high school basketball team.  On the court, he's going to bring a physicality and athletic ability that aligns with The System.  His selflessness, team-first attitude, and willingness to do the dirty work is admirable and aligns with our culture.  We're thrilled to add Mason Kemp to this group and excited to watch him continue to grow in The System."

Kemp's head coach at Mill Valley, Kurt Bangle, agrees. "Mason has been a tremendous student, athlete, and person at Mill Valley High School.  He's been a big part in putting our basketball program back as one of the top programs in the KC Metro area.  We are incredibly excited to see his hard work pay off with a great opportunity to continue his developments on the court at Gannon University."

For Kemp, the lure of playing for a team that is currently 21-2 and ranked highly in Division II was attractive. "The reason why I chose Gannon because it fits so well with all my needs," Kemp commented.  "Anytime I thought about the program and the visit, I couldn't think of a bad thing.  The campus, facilities, education, and the program are all amazing. The basketball program is just at the beginning of getting started with success."
