Gannon Splits Matches with McKendree, Salem at WWPA Bearcat Classic

O'FALLON, Ill. – Gannon earned a split of its two WWPA matches on Saturday while competing at the WWPA Bearcat Classic hosted by McKendree. The Golden Knights lost to Salem 22-15 before defeating the host Bearcats 15-9 in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights wrap up the regular season at 15-5 and 2-2 in the WWPA. They now move on to compete in the WWPA Championships on November 22-24. Biola is hosting the NCAA-qualifier tournament in Irvine, Calif.

The 15 wins are the most since the 2019 team finished at 18-4.

Salem 22, Gannon 15
Gannon fell behind 12-6 at the half before staging a rally in the second half. The Golden Knights outscored the Tigers 7-4 in the third quarter as the quarter closed with Gannon trailing 16-13. With the score at 16-11 Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) and Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored goals in the final minute. Unfortunately, Salem scored the first three goals of the final period to pull away.

Tied at 5-5 at the half, Gannon pulled away in the second half against the host Bearcats, outscoring McKendree 5-2 in both the third and fourth quarters. Tied at 7-7 midway through the third period, Petar Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) gave Gannon the lead for good at 8-7. Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece) and Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) added goals in the period to make it 10-7 after three quarters. The lead would grow to 12-7 early in the fourth as Gannon made it five straight goals.
