GREENSBURG, Pa. –
Sverre Orten's (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) penalty-kick goal with 5:53 remaining in the game gave the No. 12 Gannon men's soccer team a crucial 1-1 tie with Seton Hill in a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday.
The tie was important for Gannon (11-2-3 overall), which remained in first place in the PSAC West with a 5-0-3 record and 18 points in the standings. Second-place Lock Haven (5-3-0, 15 points) suffered a 3-2 loss to Slippery Rock (4-2-2, 14 points) later on Wednesday afternoon. Seton Hill is tied for third place with a 4-2-2 record and 14 points. Gannon will visit Lock Haven on Saturday.
Gannon and Seton Hill also tied on Sept. 28 at McConnell Family Stadium when they finished in a 2-2 draw.
The Griffins had control of the game for much of the way. They took a 1-0 lead at the 34:01 when Nils Henrich scored his sixth goal of the season into the left side of the net. James Aubrey and Vas Christodoulou were credited with assists.
Seton Hill outshot Gannon 11-7 in the first half, including 6-2 in shots on goal.
The Golden Knights came out in the second half with more intensity as they outshot the Griffins 10-2 including 4-1 in shots on goal. Gannon, however, came up empty on several shots off corner kicks.
The key moment came at the 84:07 mark when GU's
Per Kristian Lauvstad (Nesoya, Norway) took the ball to the left of the goal in the box where he was fouled. That resulted in a penalty kick for Orten, who booted a firm shot into the left side of the net past the goalie.
It was the eighth goal of the season for Orten, who has 10 assists and a team-high 26 points. He was selected as the PSAC West Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week earlier this week. Orten is tied for second on the team in goals with Lauvstad, trailing only the 10 goals of
Alander Soares (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Escola Estadual de Ensino Medio Santa Catarina).
`
Gannon goalie
Andre Moraes (Sao Bernardo do Campo, Brazil/Colegio Singular) made five saves while moving his record to 10-2-3.
