Fribourg Reaches 100 Career Goals as Golden Knights Win Twice on Saturday

Gannon celebrates Senior Day with seventh straight win

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team boosted its winning streak to seven straight games with a pair of wins against local opponents on Saturday. The Golden Knights are hosting the WWPA Erie Classic at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center.
 
Gannon opened tournament action last night with a 17-12 win over McKendree in their first WWPA match of the season. On Saturday they handed Mercyhurst a 15-11 defeat and then posted a 19-8 win over Penn State Behrend. The two wins leave Gannon at 12-3 overall, matching last year's win total in Zarko Sadikovic's first season as head coach.   
 
The Penn State Behrend match was Senior Night, with seniors Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Matthew Harkrader (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) Jr., Jordan Kraus (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) honored prior to the match. Fribourg then went out and scored a pair of goals to give him 100 for his career. In addition, normally the starting goalkeeper, Marco moved up and scored two goals along with an assist.

Gannon wraps up play in the WWPA Erie Classic on Sunday facing a Salem turn that has streamrolled the competition in the tournament so far. The Tigers come in with a 14-3 record. The two square off at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
 
Gannon 15, Mercyhurst 11
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 10-5 lead but then had to hold off the Lakers at the end. Mercyhurst scored the first goal of the match but Gannon would take a 5-3 lead after one quarter. The Golden Knights held Mercyhurst without a score in the second quarter while goals by Jordan Kraus (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Petar Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) gave Gannon an 8-3 lead. Gannon scored the first goal of the third quarter and led 12-6 when the Lakers started chipping away at the lead. They closed to within 13-11 with two minutes remaining before Rajmound Farsang and Bator Mohjacsi scored in the final minute to secure the victory. Five players scored two-or-more goals and Bator Mohjarcsi was stellar in goal with 18 saves.

Gannon 19, Penn State Behrend 8
Gannon ran its winning streak to seven games with its second win of the season against Behrend. Eleven different players scored goals, led by Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece) with three goals and four assists. Rajmund Farsang (Eger, Hungary) and Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) also scored three goals, as head coach Zarko Sadikovic substituted liberally. After starting in goal for a quarter, Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) moved up and contributed two goals and an assist. Ben Fribourg (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored Gannon's first goal, then scored a minute into the second quarter for his 100th of his career. Hewson Morphy (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) finished up in goal and had 12 saves.
