Hyde Records Hat Trick, Soares Adds Two Goals as No. 15 Golden Knights Defeat Lock Haven 7-0

ERIE, Pa.Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) scored a career-high three goals and Alander Soares (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Escola Estadual de Ensino Medio Santa Catarina) scored two more as a frustrated Gannon attack took out its frustrations on Lock Haven on Saturday night. The Golden Knights exploded for six second-half goals for a 7-0 win over the visiting Bald Eagles at McConnell Family Stadium.

The Golden Knights, ranked 15th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25, had played back-to-back ties while playing short-handed against Seton Hill and Slippery Rock. With a full complement of players the Golden Knights improved to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven dropped to 4-4-1 and 2-1-0, respectively.

In its five wins Gannon has scored 25 goals. In the two losses and two ties the attack was limited to four goals. The Golden Knights led just 1-0 at the half thanks to an early Hyde goal. The native of Brazil added two more goals in the final 45 minutes as Gannon scored four times in a span of 13 minutes to blow the game open.

After playing its lone home game in a stretch of four matches Gannon returns to the road on Wednesday, October 9 playing at West Virginia Wesleyan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight game Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) opened the scoring for Gannon. The sophomore forward took a long crossing pass from Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) from the right wing and right-footed the cross into the far right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead just 7:26 into the match. It was Hyde's third goal of the season.
  • Hyde added a second goal early in the second half off a corner kick. Sverre Orten's (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) corner went to the far left side where Hyde brought it to the ground switching it from his right to left foot then blasted it into the left side of the net. Gannon led 2-0 at the 49:22 mark.
  • Gannon's third goal was a thing of beauty. Coming down the right wing, Aanberg took a give-and-go feed and passed ahead to Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena). Ferrer's touch pass went in front of the net to a wide open Alander Soares (Caxias do Sul, Brazil/Escola Estadual de Ensino Medio Santa Catarina), who deposited the ball in the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at 55:23.
  • Now in high gear, the Gannon attack exploded for two more goals. The first was a replay of the third goal featuring the trio of Aanberg, Ferrer and Hyde. Aanberg fed Ferrer on the right wing and Ferrer's crossing pass found a streak Hyde in front of the net. His short shot into the left corner made it 4-0 at 60:46.
  • Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) made it 5-0 on a penalty kick at 62:34. The junior midfielder scored his fourth goal of the season when he deked right and blasted the ball into the far left corner of the goal.
  • RJ Benedict (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) accounted for the final goal of the night, his second of the year, at the 79:47 mark. He took a pass from Matthias Rauscher (Wasserburg, Germany/) after a touch pass from Gabriel Delin (Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymansium) and from the right side of the goal found the back of the net.
  • Soares concluded the scoring in the final minute with his second goal of the night. This one was a blast past a beleaguered Ethan Beck from 20 yards out on the left side. Soares now has four goals.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Gannon held an 8-4 advantage in shots at the half but it grew to 23-10 by the end of the game. That included 15-5 in shots on goal. The Golden Knights also had 10 corner kicks to two for the Bald Eagles.
  • Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil/) enjoyed his first career hat trick. The sophomore forward scored three times after coming in with a pair of goals. He had eight goals as a freshman and was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year.
  • A year ago Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena) led Division II in assists with 15. He had three assists coming into Saturday's match before matching that total with three more against the Bald Eagles. Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo) also had three assists.

  • The seven goals are the most since Gannon defeated Pitt-Johnstown 10-0 last year on November 3.
