Golden Knights Play Twice on Sunday in Salem Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After opening the season with five straight wins the Gannon men's water polo team tasted defeat for the first in day two of the Salem Invitational. The Golden Knights played twice at the Aquatics Center at Mylan Park, losing 13-9 to Mount St. Mary's in the morning followed by a 14-5 setback to No. 19 Navy in the afternoon. The two losses ended the best start since the 2018 team won its first 20 matches to start the season.

Mount St. Mary's and Navy were able to limit Gannon's attack as three players scored goals on Sunday. Sophomore Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) continued his hot start with eight goals and three assists in the two contests. He has now scored 31 goals in the first seven games.  

Gannon returns to action on Friday, October 13 with another contest against Mount St. Mary's, this one in Emmitsburg, Md.
 
Mount St. Mary's 13, Gannon 9
Gannon lost for the first time as Mount St. Mary's pulled away in the second half. The Mountaineers held a narrow 4-3 lead at the half and then outscored Gannon 5-2 in the third period. Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) and Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) gave Gannon an early 2-0 lead but the Golden Knights would never lead again after Mount St. Mary's scored the next three goals. Kotskar tied the match at 4-4 with a goal to start the third quarter but the Mountaineers scored seven of the next eight goals. Kotskar would lead Gannon with five goals and a pair of assists with Marty Kaverman (3 goals) and Mickic (1 goal) accounting for the other goals.

For the second straight match Gannon was limited to three players finding the back of the net. Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) had three goals and an assist while Marty Kaverman and Vlad Mickic (Subotica, Serbia/Nikola Tesla) had a goal apiece. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset)s was solid in goal against the 19th-ranked Midshipmen with eight saves. After an early Navy goal Kotskar tied the match at 1-1 halfway through the first quarter. Navy scored the final two goals of the first quarter and then added a third straight goal to start the second quarter. The Midshipmen would lead 8-3 at the half and then score the only goal of the third period.
