ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University men's cross country team returns to action following a week off on Saturday, September 23, competing in the 22nd Annual Lock Haven Invitational. The 8K men's race starts at 10 a.m. at the West Branch Cross Country Course.

A large field is anticipated for the meet. The last time Gannon competed in the Lock Haven Invitational was 2019, when the Golden Knights placed eighth out of 29 teams.

Head coach Rob Ahrens squad has competed twice in 2023. The Golden Knights had three of the top four runners to cross the finish line in the Race at the Park and claimed first place with 31 points over Allegheny (40 points) and Mercyhurst (57).

Ely Personius (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) won the individual title, and the senior had some extra motivation. His mother, Lynne Personius, died August 3 after a fight with ovarian and brain cancer. He posted his best finish ever in a 5K race while finishing with a time of 18:52.9.

Luke Malena (Medina, Ohio/Cloverleaf) and Caleb Mandel (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) finished third and fourth, respectively. Malena, a sophomore, ended the evening with a time of 19:11.1. Mandel began his graduate season with a time of 19:26.4. Junior Adam Kanterman (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) was a fourth Golden Knight in the top ten, placing seventh (19:59.2).

A week later the Golden Knights competed in the Bethany Bison Invitational, coming in ninth out of 20 teams. Mandel paced Gannon, crossing the finish line in 16th place out of a field of 190 runners. He covered the 8K course in a time of 26:52.14.

Kanterman placed 40th with a time of 27:46.83, and Malena finished 52nd in 28:18.72. Personius did not compete in the Bethany Bison Invitational.
