CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Two veteran standouts and two newcomers led the way for the Gannon women's golf team on the opening day of the 2023-24 season.
The Golden Knights tied a program record for 18 holes with a 300 team score to move into second place after the opening day of the two-day, 36-hole Charleston Golden Eagle Fall Invitational at Edgewood
Country Club. The 300 total tied the record that Gannon set on April 15 in the Gannon Spring Invitational at Whispering Woods Golf Club.
Gannon was in second place, one shot back of Ashland, in the team standings of the 16-team tournament.
Playing in beautiful, sunny conditions on Monday, senior
Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and freshman
Cloe Mateo (Sabadell, Spain/Montcau la Mola) each shot 2-over-par 73. They were tied for second with three others, five shots behind the leader, Hailey Hendershott of Glenville State (3-under 68).
Junior
Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) and
Victoria Colmenares (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/ICL Academy) each carded a 6-over 77 for Gannon.
Among the highlights of the day was White's 2-under-par 32 on the front nine. That included back-to-back birdies on the par-4 third hole and the par-3 fourth hole.
Mateo, meanwhile, shot a 1-under 37 on the back nine. She birded No. 16 and No. 18, a pair of par-5 holes.
Junior
Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) also had a solid round, shooting a 78.
The tournament continues with the final round on Tuesday morning.
