ERIE, Pa. – Acrobatics and tumbling athlete
Brianna Arre (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) and baseball pitcher
Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) have been selected as the Gannon University Chick-fil-A Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending July 28.
Each week during the offseason, Gannon Athletics will honor two student-athletes – one male and one female – who have been contributors to their teams and who are participating or excelling in summer activities.
Arre, a senior from Fredericksburg, Va., was an integral part of the 2022 Gannon acrobatics and tumbling team that finished as the national runner-up at the NCATA Championships. She also competed in all three of Gannon's squads that won individual event national titles: synchronized pyramid, synchronized toss, and open toss.
She missed the 2023 season with an injury but is training for a return to the lineup in 2024.
Arre is a Health Sciences major in Gannon's Physician Assistant program and is minoring in Spanish. She gained valuable experience in both of those academic disciplines from May 28 to June 23 when she interned at San Jorge Children's Hospital in Puerto Rico. She practiced her Spanish while interacting in and observing the country's healthcare system.
"I worked with a lot of the children and their families, as well as shadowed physicians and observed surgeries," she said. "I learned a lot and experienced a lot of culture, which will come in handy in the future while taking care of patients. To be a great healthcare provider requires understanding the patient as a whole, and knowing the culture plays a huge part in that.
Overall, it was an amazing experience, and I am so glad I went!"
Her recovery has been going well, and she is on track to return for the next season.
"I've come so far since surgery," she said, "thanks to the support I've received from my coaches, my team, and Gannon athletics."
Graeber, a junior from Washington, Pa., is having a tremendous offseason as he prepares for Gannon's 2024 baseball season.
The right-handed pitcher has starred for the Olean Oilers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He was dominant in three consecutive starts as the Oilers claimed the NYCBL Western Division championship.
On July 12, Graeber limited the Horsesheads Hitmen to one run on eight hits with eight strikeouts in six innings while earning the pitching victory in a 17-7 win.
One week later, he allowed no earned runs on four hits in a seven-inning, complete-game 7-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against the Hornell Steamers. He struck out six.
On Wednesday, July 26, Graeber limited the Genesee Rapids to one run on three hits in eight innings in a 3-1 victory in the clinching game of the NYCBL Western Division finals. He struck out seven and walked just two.

In his past four games combined, Graeber has allowed just two earned runs on 15 hits in 22 innings while striking out 24.
On Friday evening, the Oilers are scheduled to meet the Rochester Ridgemen in Game 1 of the NYCBL Championship Series.
As a member of the Gannon baseball team, Graeber has compiled a 4-3 record over his first two seasons.
