Gannon Goes Toe-to-Toe with IUP before Falling in Final Period

INDIANA, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team continued to show just how far it has come despite dropping a 12-9 decision at Indiana (Pa.) on Friday afternoon. The PSAC West loss dropped the Golden Knights to 3-9 overall and 3-4 in conference action, while IUP improved to 8-4 and 6-1, respectively.

IUP came in second in the PSAC West with their lone loss earlier in the week to Seton Hill, snapping a six-game winning streak. Gannon had lost to the Crimson Hawks 16-9 earlier in the season in a game that saw IUP jump out to a big lead before Gannon rallied.

Friday's match was entirely different, with Gannon going neck and neck with the Crimson Hawks. Through the first three quarters the game featured six ties. Gannon held the lead for much of the first half before IUP scored the last three goals to take a 6-4 lead at the half.

The Crimson Hawks scored a fourth straight goal less than a minute into the third period for a 7-4 lead, their biggest of the day. But Gannon answered with the next three goals to tie the match at 7-7 with 2:15 left in the period. Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.) scored the first, assisted by Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool), before Stevens and McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored unassisted goals to knot the match.

The two teams entered the fourth period tied at 8-8 but IUP was finally able to hold off the Golden Knights. The Crimson Hawks scored three straight goals for an 11-8 advantage with 3:01 left to play. Stevens' goal at 1:06 remaining made it 11-9, but the Crimson Hawks clinched it with a goal with eight seconds left to play.

IUP held a 30-19 advantage in shots. Both teams were successful on 12 clears, Gannon in 19 attempts and IUP in 13. Gannon committed 18 turnovers compared to 13 for the Crimson Hawks.

Stevens accounted for three goals and a pair of assists to lead the Gannon attack. Woodworth scored twice, while Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden), Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg), Grace Cunningham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and Parsons scored one goal apiece.

Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) was once again in goal and continued her strong play. The sophomore registered eight saves.

After facing the second-ranked team in the PSAC West in IUP the Golden Knights now host Western Division leader and nationally-ranked Seton Hill on Wednesday, April 12. The action gest underway at 4:00 p.m.
