Gannon Stages Impressive Rally Before Falling to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team was hoping to make it a season sweep of crosstown rival Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon after handing the Lakers a 10-9 defeat earlier in the season. The Golden Knights were also looking to possibly end Mercyhurst's PSAC Tournament hopes.

The Lakers (7-8, 5-6 PSAC West) came out on fire and jumped to a 5-0 lead after one period. As has been the case all year, Gannon put together an impressive rally and eventually closed to withing two goals on two occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Golden Knights ultimately dropped a 12-10 decision at McConnell Family Stadium.

Gannon is now 3-13 and 3-8 in the PSAC West with one match remaining. The Golden Knights host Edinboro for Senior Day on Saturday, April 29. The contest has been moved up to 11:00 a.m. from its original 5:00 p.m. start as softball's doubleheader with Mercyhurst will now follow the lacrosse match.

It was too much Maggie Newton for the Golden Knights, as Mercyhurst's leading scorer finished with seven goals and an assist. The Lakers led 5-0 after one period and 9-3 at the half as Newton six of Mercyhurst's first seven goals.

Gannon got on the board 45 seconds into the second period thanks to Alli Jacobs' (Eden, N.Y./Eden) 16th goal of the season. Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) and McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) added goals later in the period.

The Golden Knights outscored Mercyhurst 4-1 in the third quarter to pull to within 10-7 with 15 minutes remaining. The Lakers actually scored the first goal for a 10-3 lead, but Gannon ran off the next five scores by five different players.

When Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.) scored her seventh goal of the season with 13:39 remaining the Golden Knights had pulled to within two goals at 10-8. Mercyhurst gained some distance with back-to-back goals to lead 12-8 with just under 11 minutes left.

Backup goalie Riley Finnegan (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo), who entered at the start of the second half, kept the Lakers off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Woodworth scored her third goal of the match with 6:19 left to play, but the Golden Knights would not score again until 72 seconds remained. Avrey Kirisits (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) scored her second goal, assisted by Hannah Mowery (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria), to make it 12-10. That was as close as Gannon would get.

Mercyhurst ended with a 34-27 advantage in shots. Gannon had 17 turnovers to 14 for the Lakers, and Gannon was successful on 10-of-13 clears compared to 21-of-23 for Mercyhurst.

Woodworth and Kirisits were the lone Golden Knights with multiple goals. Mowery had a pair of assists. Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) played the first half in goal and finished with five saves, while Finnegan had four over the final 30 minutes.
