Golden Knights Sweep Sunday Twinbill to Win Three-of-Four vs. Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team posted a sweep of Slippery Rock on Sunday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. Thanks to a 5-4 win in the opener and an 11-1 triumph in the nightcap the Golden Knights won three of four games in the four-game weekend series. Gannon improved to 14-18 over but 8-8 in the PSAC West to move into third place in the division. SRU is now 16-17 and 4-12, respectively.

Head coach DJ Cannon's Golden Knights have four-game series remaining against Clarion, Seton Hill and Indiana (Pa.) over the next three weekends. They host Clarion in a doubleheader on Friday, April 21 before playing two at Clarion the next day.

Game 1 – Gannon 5, Slippery Rock 4
The Golden Knights found themselves trailing 3-1 after an inning and a half with SRU ace Luke Trueman on the mound. But a four-run third inning boosted Gannon to the victory. Slippery Rock scored a run in the top of the first, but Gannon answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) singled, and Wetherholt eventually scored on a double to right field by Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). After SRU took a 3-1 lead, Gannon responded with four runs in the bottom of the third. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) led of the frame with his sixth home run of the season to left centerfield. The next two Golden Knights made outs, but Kalbfus reached on an infield single to start a string of four straight hits. Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) advanced pinch runner Seth Sanders (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Midview) to second with a base hit, and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) drove in the second run of the inning with a single to right. Freshman Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) followed with a two-run single to center for a 5-3 lead. Slippery Rock threatened in the fifth, scoring a run on three hits. Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) relieved starter Jake Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) and allowed a run-scoring double to the first batter he faced but retired the next two hitters. Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) took over with one out in the sixth and a runner on second and retired five of the six batters he faced. The right-hander earned his third save of the year while striking out four in 1.2 innings. Visha evened his record at 2-2 while pitching the first 4.1 innings and striking out four. Kalbfus (2-for-2) and Zeroski (2-for-3) led the 9-hit attack with two hits apiece.

Game 2 – Gannon 11, Slippery Rock 1
Gannon gave freshman Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) plenty of early run support in the nightcap as the Cathedral Prep product improved to 2-0 with his first career complete game. The right-hander limited The Rock to just a single run in the fourth inning. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out three while the Golden Knights played error-less ball behind him. The bats, meanwhile, accounted for ten hits. Gannon took a 4-0 lead after one inning, then added three runs in both the second and the third for a 10-0 lead after three innings. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) opened the scoring with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, but the big blow in the inning was a three-run homer down the left field line by Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside). It was the redshirt junior's first home run of the season. Gannon advantage of the long ball in the second inning, as well. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) plated the first of three runs with an RBI single and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) followed a batter later with a two-run homer to right, his third of the season. The three-run third featured an RBI single by Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) along with a sacrifice fly by Hess. The third run scored thanks to an SRU error and some great hustle by Wetherholt. Gannon's 11th run crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI ground out by Cam Marciniak (Johnsonburg, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) to score Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Bielanin opened the inning with a hit by pitch and moved up on a Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) double.  Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Hess led the Golden Knights with 2-for-3 efforts. Gagnon drove in three runs, with Hess and Vega with two RBIs apiece.
