Golden Knights Pound Out 13 Hits in Nightcap to Split Doubleheader at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team split a doubleheader at Clarion on Thursday afternoon, dropping the first game 6-3 before coming back to win the nightcap by an 8-5 score. The Golden Knights remained in third place in the PSAC West with a 9-9 record and is now 15-19 overall.

Clarion limited Gannon to five hits in the opener, but the Golden Knights exploded for 13 hits in game number two.

They'll look to continue to swing the hot bats on Friday when the two teams meet again in the second of back-to-back doubleheaders. The first game gets underway at 1:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium. Thursday's twinbill was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved up two days to avoid an unfavorable weather forecast.

Game 1 – Clarion 6, Gannon 3
Three Clarion pitchers limited Gannon to five hits to hand the Golden Knights a defeat in the opener. Gannon held a 3-2 lead after three innings but the Golden Eagles took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, then added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Gannon opened the scoring in the top of the first with a run. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) opened the game with a single, and with two outs stole second. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) singled to right to drive in Wetherholt. Vega stole second and third but was left stranded there. The Golden Eagles responded with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the inning. Gannon reclaimed the lead at 3-2 in the top of the third. Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) opened the inning with a bunt single and stole second. After Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked, Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drove in Myers with an RBI single. With two outs, Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) singled to center to score Hess. Clarion took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth thanks to three hits, a pair of walks and an error.

Game 2 – Gannon 8, Clarion 5
Gannon struck for four runs in the top of the first. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) opened the game with a double to left field and came around to score on Jared Bielanin's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) base hit. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who was hit by a pitch, and Bielanin scored with two outs on a Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) single, and Gagnon proceeded to steal second and third. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) gave the Golden Knights a 4-0 lead with an RBI single. Clarion cut the lead in half with single runs in the first and third innings, but Gannon answered with a run in the fifth thanks to Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). The junior second baseman opened the inning with a double, stole third and scored on a bad throw by the catcher. The Golden Eagles made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth. They scored twice but Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) induced a double play to end the inning. Gannon answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to build the lead back to 8-4. Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Wetherholt opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. After a Hess walk, Bielanin drove in Wetherholt with a single to left. Vega plated Hess with a sacrifice fly. Five different Golden Knights – Wetherholt, Bielanin, Gagnon, Myers and Cam Vozel – finished with two hits apiece. Bielanin and Gagnon drove in two runs each, George Mason transfer Dylan Cowley picked up his first career win as a Golden Knight, improving to 1-3 while tossing the first five innings. The left-hander allowed just one earned run and walked two while striking out five. Boyer threw the last two innings, allowing an unearned run and striking out a pair.
