Strong Pitching Leads to Win in Opener as Gannon Splits Doubleheader with D'Youville

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon and D'Youville split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Knights received a strong pitching effort in game number one, prevailing 5-2, but the nightcap saw D'Youville blast eight home runs to post a 17-12 win at McConnell Family Stadium.

Warm temperatures but strong winds greeted the two teams. The twinbill was the makeup of an earlier single game with the teams deciding to play a pair on Tuesday. Gannon is now 11-7 heading into a key four-game series with Slippery Rock this weekend. The Golden Knights will play two games at Slippery Rock on Friday, April 14 before hosting SRU for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 16.

Game 1 – Gannon 5, D'Youville 2
Four pitchers combined to limit D'Youville to seven hits and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) hit a two-run homer to lead the Golden Knights to the opening-game win. Wetherholt hit a two-run blast to straightaway center in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring. The Saints evened the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but the lead didn't last long as Gannon pushed across two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Wetherholt was again involved in the scoring. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) opened the inning with a walk and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) followed with a single. Wetherholt followed with an infield single, and when the throw to first was wild, Koroly scored. Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Hess. The Golden Knights added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) reached base on a wild pitch after striking out, then moved up to second on a wild pickoff throw. He went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory). Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) started and went the first four innings. The big right-hander pitched around trouble as the Saints left eight runners on base during that time. He would allow three hits and four walks while striking out four. Freshman Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) pitched the fifth and allowed one earned run while picking up the win to go to 3-1. Connor DeMoss (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown Area) and Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) pitched an inning each, with Shields picking up his second save with a 1-2-3 seventh. Hess was 2-for-3 with a double while Wetherholt was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs.

Game 2 – D'Youville 17, Gannon 12
D'Youville salvaged a split of the doubleheader while claiming a wild win in game number two. With a strong wind blowing out to left and center field, the Saints launched eight home runs. Gannon took advantage of D'Youville wildness to walk eight times, but the Golden Knights were unable to launch one over the fence in game two. D'Youville struck for five runs in the top of the first inning thanks to back-to-back home runs. Gannon answered with three runs in the second on Cam Vozel's bases loaded triple, but D'Youville back-to-back home runs in the third and go on top 8-3. The score was 9-8 Gannon after the next half inning as the Golden Knights scored six runs. They sent 12 batters to the plate, with Cam Marciniak (Johnsonburg, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) driving in the first run with a single. Vozel added to his RBI total with a two-run single up the middle, and pinch hitter Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) drove in a pair with a double to tie the game at 8-8. Gannon reclaimed the lead when Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) walked with the bases loaded. Gannon made it 10-8 after four innings on Branden Myer's RBI single. Unfortunately, the Saints answered with seven runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good at 15-10. The home run ball again came into play with a solo homer and a two-run shot. Myers drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the sixth, but D'Youville hit its eighth home run of the day in the top of the seventh, a two-run shot, for a 17-11 lead. Gannon had three hits in the bottom of the inning and scored once on Trey Zeroski's (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) fielder's choice. D;Youville finished with 15 hits, 13 for extra bases, while Gannon had 14 safeties. Vozel was 3-for-5 with 5 RBIs, while Bielanin was a perfect 4-for-4. Gagnon and Myers drove in two runs apiece.
