Myers Drives in Four Runs as Gannon Wins Opener to Split at Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team split the first of two weekend doubleheaders with Slippery Rock on Friday afternoon and evening. The Golden Knights outscored SRU 9-7 in the opener before The Rock captured a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

The two team will meet again for a doubleheader on Sunday, April 16 at McConnell Family Stadium with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. Gannon is now 12-18 overall and 6-8 in PSAC West action while Slippery Rock is 16-15 and 4-10, respectively.

Game 1 – Gannon 9, Slippery Rock 7
The Golden Knights got off to a fast start with six runs in the first inning, but needed a pair of runs in the seventh to claim the opener. With score tied at 7-7 after The Rock scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, Gannon started its winning rally with one out when Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) poked a single to right field. Wetherholt stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Wetherholt scored the winning run on a Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) single up the middle. Cam Vozel reached on an error and Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) drove in his fourth run of the game with an RBI single to right. Ryan Smerkar (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pa Collegiate Academy (Strong Vincent)) came in and needed just seven pitches for a one-two-three inning for his first save. Gannon took a big lead with six runs in the first. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added two more runs with a single. With the bases loaded Myers hit a two-out, three-run double. Gannon added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Myers ended the game 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, while Bielanin was 3-for-4. Gannon ended with 12 hits compared to nine for SRU. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) was the second of three pitchers for the Golden Knights and went 2.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs.

Game 2 – Slippery Rock 5, Gannon 1
Gannon scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning as Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) hit a ground-rule double to left field with two outs, scoring Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Luke Trueman hit his eighth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give SRU a 2-1 lead in the second. The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth when The Rock scored three insurance runs thanks to three hits. Gannon was held to three hits, all coming in the first inning.
