Gannon Pounds Out 25 Hits in Doubleheader Split at UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The good news for Gannon head baseball coach DJ Cannon in Sunday's PSAC West doubleheader vs, Pitt-Johnstown was that his Golden Knights exploded for 13 runs in the second game to earn a split with the Mountain Cats. The bad news was that for the second time this week and third time this year Gannon lost in walk-off fashion after surrendering a late lead.

The day began at Point Stadium with an 8-7 loss to UPJ. In the nightcap, Gannon prevailed 13-4 as the two teams split a doubleheader for the second time in three days. The Golden Knights are now 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West while UPJ is 8-13 and 2-2, respectively.

Gannon is back in action on Tuesday, March 28 with a single nine-inning game at Ashland beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles handed Gannon a 5-2 defeat on March 4 in Florida.

Game 1 – Pitt-Johnstown 8, Gannon 7
The two teams entered the seventh inning tied at 3-3. A wild seventh inning ensued. Gannon pushed across four runs in the top of the frame to take a 7-3 lead. The hero in Friday's second game, Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), drove a pitch over the left field wall after a single by Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) to give Gannon a 5-3 lead. It was the redshirt senior's third of the season and school-record 32nd of his career. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) followed with back-to-back doubles and Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) drove in Gagnon with a single. All four runs scored with two outs. The bottom of the seventh turned into a nightmare, however, as the first two batters reached on singles and Asher Corl hit a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-6. Control problems followed, as a single, two walks and two hit batters allowed the Mountain Cats to push across two more runs. Gannon finished with 12 hits. Hess was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs, Kerestes 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Bielanin had two hits in four at bats. Jake Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) started and went 4.1 innings with six strikeouts.

Game 2 – Gannon 13, Pitt-Johnstown 4
The Golden Knights proved there was no hangover from the tough loss in the first game, opening the second game with a seven-run first inning as they sent 11 batters to the plate. Jared Bielanin's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) bases-loaded walk scored the first run, and a ground out by Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) made it 2-0. Carson Wible's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) single drove in two runs, and Branden Myers' (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) RBI single made it 6-0. The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny). The lead grew to 9-0 in the top of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by Myers and Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) RBI single. UPJ scored three times in the bottom of the third and once in the fourth to pull to within 9-4, but Gannon scored twice in the fifth and seventh innings. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drove in runs in the fifth, and a Hess single and Bielanin sacrifice fly accounted for the two seventh-inning runs. Gannon finished with 13 hits while four pitchers limited UPJ to five hits. Vega and Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) each went 3-for-4, with Vega driving in two runs and scoring twice and Rakow scoring three times. Zeroski was 2-for-5, while Hess, Bielanin and Wible finished with 2 RBIs each. Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was the second of Gannon's four pitchers. The freshman improved to 2-0 with 1.1 innings of relief. Connor DeMoss (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown Area) threw a scoreless sixth and Ryan Smerkar (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pa Collegiate Academy (Strong Vincent)) a three-up, three-down seventh.
