Vega, Hess Enjoy Big Games as Gannon Drops Slugfest at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) and Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) combined to drive in seven runs but Gannon dropped a 12-11 decision at Ashland on Tuesday afternoon in a scheduled nine-inning game. The two teams previously met in Florida with the Eagles prevailing 5-2. Gannon is now 7-11 while Ashland improved to 15-7.

The Golden Knights jumped out to an 8-3 lead with four runs in the top of the second and four more runs in the top of the fourth. Gannon scored the four runs in the second inning with the benefit of just one hit. Justin Kerestes' (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) single drove in one run. An error plated another and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) and Vega received bases loaded walks.

Ashland answered with a pair of runs in the second and one more in the third to close to 4-3, but Gannon came back with four runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Vega hit a three-run home and Hess followed with a solo shot. It was the team-leading fourth of the season for Hess, who boosted his career record to 32 home runs.

The 8-3 lead didn't last for long as Ashland scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three times for a 9-8 lead. Gannon tied the game in the top of the seventh on a Kerestes sacrifice fly, but Ashland scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead at 11-9.

Gannon tied the game at 11-11 in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs thanks to Hess' two-out, two-run double. Evan Harrison (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Aloysius Gonzaga S.S.) retired the Eagles in the bottom of the frame, but Gannon went three-up, three-down in the top of the ninth.

Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), the last of eight Gannon pitchers on the day, came in to throw the ninth and walked leadoff batter Cam Miller. Miller stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored the winning run on Seth Schroeder's single to left center. It was the fourth time this year the Golden Knights have lost on a walkoff hit.

Gannon scored 11 runs despite having just seven hits, but the Golden Knights had 10 walks and three hit batters. Ashland totaled 12 hits and received 11 bases on balls.
Vega was 1-for-3 with 4 RBIs plus a pair of walks. Hess had two hits in five at bats, driving in three runs. Zeroski walked three times.

Gannon now returns to PSAC West action this weekend with a four-game series against California (Pa.). Gannon plays the first two games at Cal on Saturday, April 1,
then returns to McConnell Family Stadium for a pair on Sunday.
